Problem Set-02

This document contains a physics problem set involving simple harmonic motion (SHM). It includes 12 problems calculating properties of SHM systems like mass, spring constant, frequency, amplitude, velocity, displacement, energy, and beat frequency. The problems involve blocks attached to springs undergoing SHM and the superposition of multiple SHM motions.

Problem Set-02

Date of Submission: (26 December 2023) Before: 1:00 PM

1. A block of unknown mass is attached to a spring with a spring constant of 4.5 N/m and
undergoes simple harmonic motion with an amplitude of 10cm. When the block is
halfway between its equilibrium position and the end point, its speed is measured to be
20cm/s. Calculate (a) the mass of the block, (b) the period of the motion and (c) the
maximum acceleration of the block.

2. If the spring constant is k = 90N/m and mass of the block attached to it is 320g, what is
the velocity of the block at equilibrium position if it is oscillating with an amplitude of
15cm?

3. A block of wood of mass 500g, attached to a spring and kept of a frictionless surface is
stretched by 6cm from its equilibrium and released resulting in SHM. If the acceleration
of the block at the moment of release was −14m/s2. (a) What is the spring constant? (b)
What is the frequency of oscillation? (c) What is the displacement of the block after
10s?

4. If an SHO consisting of a spring with k = 400N/m and block of mass 8kg has an
amplitude of 25cm, what is potential energy of the system after 5 seconds? Assume
zero initial phase.

5. The total energy of a spring-mass system executing SHO is 50J and the block of mass
is 5g. What is the maximum velocity of the block?

6. Two vibrations along the same line are described by the equations

x1= 0.05 cos (320πt)

x2= 0.02 cos (326πt)
Calculate the number of beats produced per sec and the modulation frequency?

7. Two simple harmonic motions are represented by the equations:

y1 = 10 sin(3t+ π/4)
y2 = 5(sin 3t + cos3t)
What is the ratio of their amplitudes?
8. Two vibrations along the same line are described by the equations x1 = 0.03 cos(10πt)
x2= 0.03 cos(12πt) where x1,x2 are measured in meters and t is in seconds. Obtain the
equation describing the resultant motion and hence find the beat frequency.

9. Find the amplitude and the phase angle of the simple harmonic motion obtained by
combining the motions x1= (2cm) sinωt and x2= (2cm) sin (ωt+ π/3).

10. Calculate the amplitude and phase angle of the harmonic oscillations obtained by the
superposition of two collinear oscillations represented by the following equations:

x1= (0.02m) sin(5πt + π/2)

x2= (0.03m) sin(5πt + π/4)

11. Show that x = 5 + cos(5πt + φ) is a solution to the EOM of SHO.

12. Two radio stations broadcast their programmers at the same amplitude A, and at slightly
different frequencies, where their difference is equal to 103 Hz. A detector receives the
signals from the two stations simultaneously. Find the time interval between successive
maxima of the intensity of the signal received by the detector.
