IV. PROCEDURES
a. Reviewing previous
lesson or presenting the Review on what is communication, its nature, elements and functions
new lesson
(REVIEW) Communication is a process of sharing and conveying messages or information
from one person to another within and across channels, contexts, media, and
cultures (McCornack, 2014).

Nature of Communication

1. Communication is a process
2. Communication occurs between and among two or more people ( the
speaker and the receiver)
3. Communication can be expressed through written or spoken words, actions
(non-verbal) or both spoken words and nonverbal actions at the same time.

Elements of Communication

Communication is divided into elements which help us better understand its

mechanics or process. These elements are the following:

1. Speaker 4. Channel 7. Feedback

2. Message 5. Decoding 8. Context
3. Encoding 6. Receiver 9. Barrier

Functions of Communication

1. Control
2. Social Interaction
3. Motivation
4. Emotional Expression
5. Information Dissemination
b. Establishing a purpose for Communication cannot take place without a medium or a channel. Let us see if you
the lesson are familiar with the history of communication devices.
(MOTIVATION)

DIRECTION: Trace the progression of communication devices by arranging the

following medium chronologically.

d. Discussing new concepts Let us go back to your answers in the previous activity. Examine the scenario
and practicing new skills carefully and answer the questions that follow:
#1
(ANALYSIS) 1. What are the elements of communication present in the scenario given?
2. Can communication happen in the absence of ONE of these elements?
3. Should all elements be presented in order for communication to take place?
4. What are the key elements that are needed for communication to take
place?
e. Discussing new concepts The arrangement of the elements of communication follows a specific pattern
and practicing new skills depending on the context of both the speaker and the listener. This pattern is
#2 referred to as Model of Communication.
(ABSTRACTION)
What is a Model?

A model is widely used to depict any idea, thought or a concept in a simpler way
through diagrams, pictorial representations etc. Models go a long way in making the
understanding of any concept easy and clear. Through a model one can easily
understand a process and draw conclusions from it. In simpler words a model
makes the learning simple.

Let us now learn about the various communication models. There are various
communication models. But this lesson will focus on the most common:

a. Aristotle Model
b. Berlo Model
c. Shannon-Weaver
d. Schramm Model
e. Transactional Model

 ARISTOTLE MODEL OF COMMUNICATION 

Aristotle was the first to take an initiative and design the communication model.

According to this model, the speaker plays a key role in communication. He is

the one who takes complete charge of the communication. The model says that the
speakers communicates in such a way that the listeners get influenced and respond
accordingly.

Aristotle model of communication is the golden rule to excel in public speaking,

seminars, lectures where the sender makes his point clear by designing an
impressive content, passing on the message to the second part and they simply
respond accordingly. Here the sender is the active member and the receiver is
passive one.

 BERLO MODEL OF COMMUNICATION 

While the Aristotle model of communication puts the speaker in the central position
and suggests that the speaker is the one who drives the entire communication, the
Berlo’s model of communication takes into account the emotional aspect of the
message. Berlo’s model of communication operates on the SMCR model.

S-Source
The source in other words also called the sender is the one from whom the thought
originates. He is the one who transfers the information to the receiver after carefully
putting his thoughts into words.
M- Message
When an individual converts his thoughts into words, a message is created. The
process is also called as Encoding.

C-Channel
Channel actually refers to the medium how the information flows from the sender to
the receiver. All five senses are the channels which help human beings to
communicate with each other.

R-Receiver
When the message reaches the receiver, he tries to understand what the listener
actually wants to convey and then responds accordingly. This is also called as
decoding.

 SHANNON-WEAVER MODEL OF COMMUNICATION 

The Shannon and Weaver model (1949) depicts communication as a linear or

one-way process consisting of five elements. It proposes that a message actually
originates from the person who gets the thought or has the information. The sender
is also called the Source of information. The information then gets transmitted from
the brain to the mouth and comes out as a signal which then reaches the recipient
after joining hands with several noises and other disturbances. The recipient then
further passes on the message to its final destination or other minds of other
individuals.

 SCHRAMM’S MODEL OF COMMUNICATION 

Wilbert Schramm (1954) modified the Shannon-Weaver Model. He believed that

information is useless until it is carefully put into words and conveyed to others. For
Schramm coding and decoding are the two essential processes of an effective
communication. He also emphasized that communication is incomplete unless and
until the sender receives a feedback from the recipient. Schramm believed that
communication is actually a two way process between the first part and the second
party.
 TRANSACTIONAL MODEL OF COMMUNICATION 

The Transactional model shows that the elements in communication are

interdependent. Each person in the communication act is both a speaker and a
listener, and can be simultaneously sending and receiving a message.

There is a collaborative exchange of messages between communicators with the

aim of understanding each other. It also shows that a barrier, such a noise, may
interfere with the flow of communication.

NOTE: The models of communication have been enhanced over time. From simply
being a one-way process, many proponents have enhanced such models so as to
ensure that the flow of communication is barrier free and effective.

f. Developing mastery
(leads to Formative Let us try if you have understood the key concepts in each model.
Assessment 3)
DIRECTION: Identify the Communication Model described.

1. This model shows the exchange of message between the speaker and the
receiver.
2. This model was originally designed to explain the process of communication via
the telephone and introduced the concept of noise.
3. This model was developed in the ancient times by a renowned philosopher.
4. This model emphasized on the role of channel in communication.
5. This model stressed the importance of having a common field of experience.
6. This model introduced the concept of feedback.
7. This model focused on the speaker who plays a key role in communication
g. Finding practical
applications of concepts  Activity 1
and skills in daily living
(APPLICATION) DIRECTION: Point out the Communication Models used in the following scenarios:

1. Teacher discusses the lesson

2. Netizens react on the newest Press Release by the CHO
3. Video-calling with a friends suddenly interrupted due to loss of signal
4. Best friends sharing their experiences about playing ML
5. Exchange of messages from two persons who haven’t seen each other for a
long time

 Activity 2:

DIRECTION: Trace the communication process and specify what model is used in
the following scenarios.

DIRECTION: Conceptualize the communication process showing each element of

communication: sender, encoding, transmission, receiver, decoding and feedback.
Below the drawing, list two to three possible noise factors and how you would
address them.

1. As your barangay’s SK Chairman, you must immediately inform the youth of

the postponement of the Summer League/Basketball and Volleyball League.

2. You want to thank a kind stranger who helped you, but do not have his
contact information.

3. You want to convince your neighbour to enroll in Bislig City National High
School

4. You want to conduct information dissemination on Safety Measures against

Covid-19 via social media platform

 Activity 4:

DIRECTION: Placing yourself in the position of the receiver, give appropriate

feedback in the given scenarios. If you think feedback is not necessary, leave the
item blank.

1. The teacher reprimanded you for starting a commotion during classes but it
was in fact your seatmate who did it.
2. The barangay officials ordered curfew for all minors.
3. Your girlfriend/boyfriend broke up with you

DIRECTION: Make your own Model of Communication. Explain the arrangement of

the elements. You may add other elements to make communication more effective.

j. Additional activities for

application or remediation Interview a friend or family member and ask him or her what he or she thinks of one
(REMEDIATION) of the following statements and how this statement impacts relationships. Do not tell
your interviewee that these are myths or facts about communication. Instead, record
his or her perceptions about the statement and discuss whether you agree or
disagree with his or her views. After the interview, evaluate the communication
process and point out the Communication Model used.

Communication does not always require understanding.

Communication is not always a good thing.
Communication will not solve all problems.
Meanings are in people, not words.
Communication is not simple.
