“Cohesive devices also known as ‘Linking
Words’ are words or phrases that link different
parts of a text together and allow it to flow
logically. They help show the connection
between ideas acting as a connector by signaling
additions, contrasts, cause and effect, and other
relationships. For example, words and phrases
like ‘however’, ‘therefore’, ‘in addition’, ‘for
example’, ‘to conclude’ etc. are cohesive
devices. Using them properly makes your
writing more coherent and easier to follow.”

Activity 2: Spot the Cohesive Devices
Directions: With your group, Read the passage
below and list the cohesive devices used in the
passage assigned.

Group 1: I personally believe that libraries are

among humanity's most important institutions for
several reasons.
Firstly, most of humanity's collective knowledge
is stored in libraries.
Secondly, libraries protect and preserve this
knowledge. They also classify or group the
materials into logical and easily available
divisions. Furthermore, libraries make the
materials available to everyone and even provide
librarians to help us find what we need.
Finally, libraries are our link to the past and our
gift to the future.
In conclusion, libraries are important institutions
for humanity.
 Group 2: There are a few things you can do to
eliminate computer viruses. First, turn on
Windows Firewall. To do this, go to the Control
Panel, and click on Windows Firewall. When the
window pops up, you should click on the button
next to "Turn Firewall on." Next, download a good
anti-virus program, like Kaspersky, Norton, or
Avast. Before you run it, make sure you shut down
all programs, and also disconnect from the
Internet.
Now, run a full scan with the program. When the
scan is finished, follow the recommendations of
the program to delete or quarantine any viruses it
finds. But before you delete any files, back up your
registry and make a restore point. This is
important. For example, I once forgot to do this
and deleted an important file by accident, so I had
to reinstall everything on my computer. However,
if these steps did not work, consult with a
professional computer technician.
