    A Living Sacrifice

    A study on the purpose and meaning of being a living sacrifice

    This study is designed for the serious student of the word; it works through exegesis and
    will require your efforts to get through. In order to complete this study, you will need the
    following:
    (1) Bible
    a. At least 2 versions, KJV and a second version of your choice. I
    recommend the Amplified or the Message. Using the NKJV or
    modern KJV are merely modified KJV. You need a version that is
    substantially different
    (2) Concordance with Lexicon, Strongs and/or Thayers
    (3) A Commentary on the bible, Clarke’s, Matthew Henry’s or JFB
    (4) A dictionary/encyclopedia; Brown’s, Hitchcock’s, ISBE
    (5) A notebook

    One good source of all of this can be found in many computer based programs; my
    personal favorite is e-sword because it is free and has many of the tools you will need to
    do this study.

    I.Romans 12.1-2
    Romans 12:1-2 I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that ye
    present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable unto God, which is your
    reasonable service. (2) And be not conformed to this world: but be ye
    transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that
    good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God.

    1) Words and definitions


    For each of the words below, determine the Greek word and definition. If
    the definition is plural or a verb (i.e., apples is defined as more than one
    apple or destroying is defined as to destroy) then go to the root and
    determine its definition.

    e. Sacrifice
    f. Acceptable
    g. Reasonable
    h. Service
    i. Conformed

    k. Transformed
    l. Renewing

    The two passages of scripture can be broken down in a number of individual


    passages.

    2) I beseech you therefore, brethren


    When every the word “therefore” is encountered; it is indicating the result
    of an argument for or against a specific case. What is that case, as found in
    chapter 11?

    a. Romans 11.32 – read from a version different from KJV


    1. Ref: Gal 3.22; Rom 1.19-20

    b. What does the word ‘concluded’ mean (KJV)?


    c. What does the scripture mean?
    d. How does this relate to understanding the will of God?
    e. Why is it so important that our understanding be supplied by God?

    f. Research the meaning of ‘depth of the riches’.

    1. This passage is one that would be sung to the people
    and they would respond with verse 8 and subsequent
    identical verses. Try praying this psalm to the Lord.

    our relationship to this knowledge and our capability to understand

    judgments? Do you understand why Paul would use such a strong
    word as ‘beseech’?
