CHAPTER I

INTRODUCTION

Learning is a process of achieving knowledge, skill, and performance. Thus,

learning is ultimately considered one of the fundamental pillars of society changes.

Nowadays, technology has obviously made our lives easier. That means internet

technology has been considered as an important medium for many aspects of our lives

including academic learning (Nahid Khalil Elfaki, 2019)

The world is constantly changing, in return, people can live a simpler and more

comfortable life. Before, students study face-to-face. But, now, because of the global

crisis, we study online, without having to leave our home. Students and teachers are

adapting to the new normal. Online learning is effective for those people who are

privileged enough to study and to have the tools that they need to learn. Not everyone

learns right away, and not everyone is accustomed to adapting to new sudden changes.

These changes can be one of the reasons that can affect student performance in class.

Online learning has its strengths and weaknesses. The benefit of online learning is

that it reduces the hassle for the students, as they do not need to study face-to-face. They

also get to manage their time as they do not always follow the same routine. The

advantages can affect the students' academic performance positively. The students can

have more time to study as they do not need to go to school. They also can take a rest

whenever they want, which can help them to focus on studying later on. However, there

are drawbacks to online learning. The disadvantage is that there are many distractions to

study at home, and not everyone has a better environment to study.

This research paper will present the Impact of Online Class to the Academic

Performance in Specialized Writing Subjects of Grade-12 HUMSS students at

Montessori De San Ildefonso.

BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY

According to Stewart, (Stewart, 2010) online education was promoted by using

postal systems that send written material to students and teachers. Numerous studies

reported that students in higher educational institutions who engaged in online

class generally performed better than those in face-to-face courses (Elfaki, 2019).

Because of what is happening nowadays caused by COVID-19, the Department of

Education has decided that the students will take online-distance learning or online

classes. The online class has had a significant impact on the academic performance of

students in specialized writing subjects.

For the purposes of our writing courses, we define specialized writing as the

production of non-literary, pragmatic texts designed for use in a specific field or

discipline, such as science, technology, law, business, administration, or journalism

(Russell, n.d.). (Feng, 2015) Writing is a fundamental component of language. When a

child writes, thoughts and knowledge are blended together creating a unique meaning

(Jones, 2010). Writing Academic English is the essential writing text to prepare high-

intermediate and advanced college or college-bound English language learners for

academic success (Hogue, 2006). The impact of online class to the Academic

Performance in Specialized Writing Subjects can be investigated through causal-

comparative. Using this method, the researcher is tasked to know the impact of online

class in Creative Non-Fiction and Creative writing subjects of the Grade-12 HUMSS

students in Montessori de San Ildefonso.

STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM

The study aims to know the Impact of Online Class to the Academic Performance

in Specialized Writing Subjects of Grade-12 HUMSS students at Montessori de San

Ildefonso, the researchers would like to know the following:

1. Do students get pressured by the activities in online learning?

2. 3. Is face to face classes much effective than online learning?

3. 4. Does students learns in online learning?

RESEARCH HYPOTHESIS

The study was guided by the hypothesis that:

There is no significant effect between the online classes to the academic

performance in specialized writing subjects of Grade-12 HUMSS students at Montessori

de San Ildefonso.

SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY

This study ascertained if any significant relationship existed between the online

class and the academic performance in specialized writing subjects among the Grade-12

HUMSS students of Montessori de San Ildefonso. This study could be helpful to the

following:

 The Students –to let the students know what is the possible impact of online class

in their academic performance. Does the online class convey a positive

improvement in academic performance or not?

 The Parents – to inform the parents that they should help and guide their children

who are taking online classes at home.

 The Teachers – if there is a chance that there is an impact between online class

and the academic performance in specialized writing subjects of a student, this

study can help them on what are the possible ways that they need to do or offer

for their students to catch up.

 The Government – this study can help the government to think new ways that

will lighten the tasks of the students for them to not leave behind.

 The Future Researchers – this study can be a future reference for similar or

related studies.
SCOPE AND LIMITATIONS

The main purpose of the study is to know the impact of online class to the

academic performance in specialized writing subjects which are Creative Non-Fiction

and Creative Writing among the students during the school year 2020-2021 only in

Montessori de San Ildefonso. The researchers limited the study to 40 male and female

Grade-12 students enrolled in the Humanities and Social Sciences Strand. Each of the

respondents was given a questionnaire to answer.

THEORETICAL FRAMEWORKS

Online learning can take a number of different forms. Often people think of

Massive Open Online Courses, or MOOCs, where thousands of students watch a video

online and fill out questionnaires or take exams based on those lectures (Paul, 2019).

Online Education is provided based on pedagogical purpose. The model attempts to

integrate the work of several other major theorists and model builders such as Anderson

(2011). It is a daunting task to theoretically frame the pedagogy of the online classroom.

Synthesizing varied new and largely untested practices (Draves, 1999)

CONCEPTUAL FRAMEWORK

This research studied the effects of the beauty standard of society of

Montessori De San Ildefonso. Variables are as follow:

Independent Variables
Dependent Variable
 Online Learning
 Specialized  Academic
Subject Writing Performance
 Grade 12 Students
