Cohesive devices
- are linguistic elements used to connect and organize ideas within a
text, creating coherence and aiding in the flow of information.
Therefore
- Used to give or show conclusion
- It signals that what follows is a result or inference drawn from what has
been stated earlier, helping to connect ideas and guide the reader
through the logical progression of the text.
- In this way, "therefore" contributes to coherence by linking related
thoughts and reinforcing the overall structure of the writing.
And
- Used to add something to the previous idea.
- It connects related ideas, adding them together or indicating a
sequence of events.
- "And" is a versatile cohesive device used to join elements within a
sentence or between sentences, enhancing the flow and coherence of
the text by showing the relationship between different parts.
However
- Used in expressing contrasting ideas.
- t serves to introduce a contrasting viewpoint or information after a
preceding statement.
- "However" helps to maintain coherence in writing by showing the
relationship between contrasting ideas, allowing for a smoother
transition between them and facilitating the reader's understanding of
the text's overall message.
Because
- Used to give reason.
- It establishes a cause-and-effect relationship between the two clauses,
with the main clause expressing the consequence of the reason
presented in the dependent clause.
- "Because" is a crucial cohesive device that helps to clarify the logical
connection between ideas, allowing writers to explain their reasoning
and readers to understand the motivation behind certain actions or
events.
