Event Code List

SMCS - 7569

Event codes identify significant events that occur to machine systems. electronic control modules
(ECMs) store the data from the events. This function allows tracking of the machine history and is an
aid in troubleshooting.

When the transmission/chassis ECM activates an event code, the operator or the technician will be
alerted by the Messenger. Most active events will be logged by the ECM, however some events are
active only and active only events are not logged. Event codes are referred to by an event identifier
number (EID). The events that are active and the events that are logged can be viewed with the
following equipment:

• Messenger

• Cat® Electronic Technician (Cat ET) Service Tool

Warning Levels
The ECM will assign a warning level to an active event code. Event codes are one of three levels,
according to the severity of the abnormal condition. Each warning level requires a specific response
from the operator. The warning levels and required operator response are listed below.

Level 1

Warning level 1 alerts the operator that a system requires attention. The operator should check the
involved system or perform maintenance on the involved system at the earliest possible time.

Level 2

https://127.0.0.1/sisweb/sisweb/techdoc/techdoc_print_page.jsp?returnurl=/sisweb/sisweb/... 1/30/2023
120M Motor Grader B9C00001-UP (MACHINE) POWERED BY C6.6 Engine(SEBP49... Page 2 of 12

Warning level 2 requires changing the operation of the machine or performing a maintenance
procedure. Failure to correct a level 2 warning may result in component damage.

Level 2S

Warning level 2S requires an immediate change in machine operation to avoid possible system
damage.

Level 3

Warning level 3 requires an immediate safe machine shutdown to avoid damage to the machine or
injury to personnel around the machine. The problem that caused the event must be corrected before
machine operation can resume.

Indications and System Response

Messenger

Messenger alerts the operator when an event code is active.

The warning indicators for the subsystem on the Instrument Cluster will illuminate when an event
code is activated for a particular subsystem. When level 1 events are active, the warning indicator for
the subsystem will be the only type of indicator that will illuminate.

The action Indicator will flash red when a level 2 warning or level 3 warning is active. If
communication between Messenger and the Instrument Cluster fails, the action lamp will flash
yellow.

The action alarm is driven as an output directly from the Instrument Cluster. If a level 3 warning is
active, the action alarm will sound a tone that is pulsing. The action alarm will sound these tones to
alert the operator that immediate action is required.

If two warnings of a different level are active at the same time, the highest level warning will be
displayed.

Table 1 shows the Messenger response to these warning levels.

Caterpillar Electronic Technician (Cat® ET)

When a power train abnormal operating condition occurs, the status screen on Cat® ET indicates that
there is an active event.

Event codes are displayed on Cat® ET in the following format:

EXXXX Description of the code

The "E" means that the code is an event code. The "XXXX" is a numeric identifier. The numeric
identifier is followed by a description of the code.

Active event codes are listed in ascending numerical order, the lowest number is listed first. Active
event codes are removed from the list when the condition is no longer present.

Logged Event Codes

Some event codes are logged in the ECM memory. Some event codes are active only. The logged
event codes are listed in chronological order, the most recent code is listed first.

A logged code is cleared from memory when one of the following occurs:

• The technician clears the code.

• The code does not reoccur for 1000 hours.

• A new code is logged and there are already ten logged codes in memory. In this case, the oldest
logged code is cleared.

Note: Always clear logged event codes after investigating and correcting the problem which
generated the code.

Perform the following steps to troubleshoot an event.

1. Obtain the following information from the operator:

◦ The event

◦ Time the event occurred

◦ Engine operating conditions at the time of the event.

◦ Any systems that were installed by the dealer or customer that could cause the event

2. Verify that the event is not due to normal machine operation or operator error.

3. Check all fluid levels.

4. Troubleshoot and repair any active diagnostic codes.

Table 2 lists the event codes that apply to the power train control system and the recommended
responses. Use Cat ET to determine the event codes that are active or logged.

The event will be logged if the event code is active for more than
10 seconds after the start of the machine.

The event is active when brake accumulator pressure is less than

accumulator pressure reaches 9825.0 kPa (1425.0 psi).

Pressure
1. Verify that the service brake accumulator pressure sensor is
reading accurately. Compare the pressure sensor reading to a
hydraulic pressure gage hooked to same hydraulic circuit.
2. If the pressure sensor is reading accurately, do not replace the
pressure sensor. Troubleshoot the hydraulic system. Look for
hydraulic leaks.
3. Verify that the brake accumulators hold charge per their
specifications.
E329 Transmission Filter
Replace the transmission oil filter.
(2) Plugged
Activated during the autolube cycle (configured Autolube
duration) when the pressure does not reach the minimum
configured Autolube pressure target. Stays active until pressure
is reached during a cycle. This event is logged.

In Cat® ET, check the following configured parameters:

E334 Low Auto Lube
· Cycle Duration. The default is 240 seconds. Low time setting
(2) Pressure
may not allow time for pressure to be reached.
· Minimum Pressure. Default is 18615.9 kPa (2700.0 psi).
· High setting may not allow pressure to be reached in the
configured duration time.

Check for leaks, kinked or plugged lines, fuse or pump.

E358 Engine Underspeed E358 is a tattletale event that is displayed and logged when low
(2) engine speed operation abuse is detected. This event is part of the
"Anti-Stall Protection Strategy" and is only used on 16M
machines.

The ECM will automatically shift the transmission to neutral if

low engine speed (below 575 rpm) is detected.
The Directional Switch (FNR) must be moved to the Neutral

When operating the machine at or near full load it is
recommended to maintain high idle engine speed (1800 rpm) or
greater.
