Quiz 7: Solutions

RR
Problem 1. Evaluate the double integral R
(x − 1) dA, where R
is the region in the first quadrant enclosed between y = x and y = x3 .
Solution. The straight line y = x and the cubic parabola y = x3
have three points of intersection: at x = 0, x = −1, and x = 1. The
region R in the first quadrant enclosed between these two curves can
be described as 0 ≤ x ≤ 1, x3 ≤ y ≤ x. Thus,

Problem 2. Evaluate −2 0 e−(x +y ) dy dx by converting to an
equivalent integral in polar coordinates. Sketch the region R.
Solution. The region of integration √ R can be described by the
inequalities −2 ≤ x ≤ 2, 0 ≤ y ≤ 4 − x2 . It is easy to see that
R is the upper half of the disk of radius 2 centered at the origin. In
polar coordinates, R can be described by the inequalities 0 ≤ θ ≤ π,
0 ≤ r ≤ 2. Therefore
