HISTORY
1570 : Durgadi fort or the kalyan fort was built by Shivaji Maharaj
to set up his own navy as he understood the importance of creek
and the vasai fort and want to get a hold on this region.
After this, the Portuguese built various forts along the creek to
Track the movement of Marathas. Ghodbunder was one of them.
1739 : Marathas took Vasai and Dongari fort from Portuguese and
made Vasai fort as their new naval base wile Dongari remained
as a surveillance fort.
1756 : To ensure the safety of Vasai fort and Durgadi fort, anoth-
er fort was built at a higher altitude than other forts, which was
called as Pimplas fort. Its main purpose was surveillance.
1838 : Portuguese had built a large fort in Thane which was de-
molished by the Britishers and converted into a jail.
CHANGES OBSERVED
The landuse pattern has changed over the period of time. Fishing was practiced earlier, with major livelihoods being farming and extraction of Mud [Reti Bunder].
The boats were used in the extraction of the mud from the water using manual labour and steel vessels, which was later replaced by makeshift dredgers before be-
ing deemed as an illegal practice.
