Communication and Fashion Design in the form of four years Graduate Degree comprising of 8

Intuition is akin to an elongated insight that tells us we are on to something dynamic to face the
competitive world of design.
Design also involves reason that assesses the problem and analyzes the possibilities for solution. It is
the analytical process that relies on method and logic to assess, refine, and verify its various
hypotheses. At SID, this reflects in the evaluation methods of the student’s project based assignments
on the basis of daily performances.
This career not only provides one with the satisfaction of seeing ideas manifested into shape and
form, but rewards one with recognition.
Career counseling advisors assess student’s interests, personality, values and skills, and also help

Symbiosis School for Liberal Arts - SSLA
INTRODUCTION
The Symbiosis School for Liberal Arts (SSLA) is a realization of Symbiosis International University’s
commitment to provide comprehensive and relevant education pursued through academic rigour.
SSLA offers students the opportunity to study a four year full-time Bachelor of Arts (Liberal Arts
Degree) and Bachelor of Science (Liberal Arts Degree) program covered over eight semesters.
The Liberal Arts programme is styled very closely on internationally valued models where students are
offered a wide range of courses, choosing majors and minor areas of specialization from fields
previously considered to be ‘academically incompatible.’ A student can combine subjects like Business
studies as a Major with a Philosophy Minor or Mathematics & Statistics as a Major with an
Anthropology Minor.
A degree in Liberal Arts, as opposed to other programmes of study, aims at creating a strong, well-
rounded foundation for all students, regardless of their major and minor field of study. Students are
exposed to a range of building blocks as their core courses that span diverse fields as history,
sociology, anthropology, science, creative writing, and critical thinking. Our philosophy of establishing
such a foundation is simple – learning is dynamic. To know this world, students must have the full
range of tools to understand, recognize, critique, and appreciate themselves and their role in this
globally dynamic environment. Our distinct method of instruction sets the tone for this strong
foundation, as it is diverse, experiential, practical and heavily steeped in theory. Thus, all students
graduate with their preferred choices of majors and minors that is expressed as a unique combination
for each student forged on a strong foundation of knowledge that spans a myriad different learning
blocks. This is what makes a liberal arts’ education unique!
VISION
To bring the best minds together to explore ideas and practices for creative change.
MISSION
We believe that our role as educators extends far beyond teaching in the classrooms. We prepare
students, not just for their future careers, but also for lives of responsibility and societal leadership.
We aim to nurture students into sensitive, ethically and critically conscious citizens who will contribute
responsibly to communities and society.
INFRASTRUCTURE
Located on the 11th floor of the Vishwabhawan Symbiosis Campus at Senapati Bapat Road, SSLA has
a breathtaking view of the city of Pune and picturesque hills surrounding it. Being part of the same
campus as the Symbiosis School for Economics and the Symbiosis Law School, SSLA shares the
various facilities that SIU offers. All student needs are taken care of by SSLA.
Library: Even though the SSLA library is just being set up, all students have membership to the nearby
British Council Library and the library of the Gokhale Institute of Politics and Economics, along with
access to the libraries of all the other institutes of Symbiosis.
Sports and Fitness: Students at Symbiosis School for Liberal Arts have the opportunity to use the
sports and fitness facilities available at the various Symbiosis Campuses around Pune. These include a
fully equipped fitness gym and a swimming pool in addition to other sporting grounds and facilities. All
medical requirements are take care by the Health centre located on the same campus including the
medical insurance covered by Symbiosis International University
WiFi: SSLA is wifi-enabled and students can access the internet any time during school hours for
educational purposes, research and communication.
Reprography Centre: The Vishwabhavan campus houses a reprography centre which takes care of all
stationery and printing related needs of the students. There is also an ATM of Bank of Baroda for the
convenience of the students.
Canteen & Mess: Within our campus, students have access to a canteen and a mess. Most students
staying on residence use the mess facility on a daily basis. The canteen within the campus serves a
variety of snacks, drinks and meals. Students can get lunch, dinner and everything in between.
FACULTY
The school attracts faculty from academia and the professional world alike. SSLA works with full-time
as well as visiting faculty, who share their area of expertise. These visiting faculty are people involved
in industry, the social sector, etc and are able to contribute invaluably through their vast knowledge
and domain experience. Please visit www.ssla.edu.in for more on each faculty member.
Bachelor of Science (Liberal Arts) for those majoring in courses such as Biology, Mathematics &
Statistics or Computer Science.
Student are expected to take (over the 4-years) 18 core (compulsory) courses + 8 general (electives)
+ 1 Minor specialization subject (6 papers) + 1 Major specialization subject (10 papers)
Placement
Although only in its first year of operation, SSLA has set up a placement cell that comprises both
students as well as faculty members to explore and carry out ideas and programs which will facilitate
the placement of students in their last year at the school. Students of SSLA have a mandatory
internship as part of their four year program. SSLA will also form, either on its own or in collaboration
with various other Symbiosis institutes, relationships with a number of industry professionals and also
professionals working in the social sector.
Method of Instruction
SSLA follows the internationally accepted liberal arts methodology of teaching, instruction, assessment
& evaluation. All classes are taught in an interactive manner and student participation in class is
encouraged. The assessment process at SSLA is completely internal, which means that students are
assessed on their overall performance and progress during a semester, instead of being assessed
based on one final exam. These methods adopted by SSLA are those that contemporary research has
shown to be most conducive to the learning process.
Career prospects
A degree in Arts or Science from our liberal arts college offers our graduates a diversity of choices for
their future, based on their major. With foundations in critical thinking, analysis, good communication
skills, and a strong social consciousness about their participation in and engagement with the world,
our graduates carry forward not only their field of specialization but also bring to the fore an effective
sense of self. Illustrations of people with a liberal arts education include Kofi Annan, former Secretary
General of the United Nations, Condoleeza Rice, former United States Secretary of State and National
Security Adviser, and Dr. Peter Agre, 2003 Nobel Prize winner in chemistry.
