II. ACTIVITY

1. How did the art of the Philippines develop?

 Artistic paintings were introduced to the Filipinos in the 16th century when the
Spaniards arrived in the Philippines. Due to the church’s supervision of Filipino
art and Spanish occupation of the Philippines, the purpose of most paintings
from the 16th -19th century was to aid the catholic church.

2. Cite at least one (1) great artwork in each period and give its great impact to the Philippines.
 √Pre-Colonial Period (6185 BC to 1520 AD)
 Shell Bracelets and Pendants (Cagayan, Palawan, Sorsogon),
 The Philippines becomes interested in shells fashioned into tools and promote it
the country as an art and made by an artist who’s good in determining the kinds
and aged of the shells.

 √Spanish Colonial Art Period (1521-1898)

 Nicolas Enriquez- The Assumption of the Virgin
 The Philippines adapt the art of the Spanish colonial period because of its
incredibly broad scope, Spanish colonial art cannot be defined by any one
particular style, subjects or form. One can find a preponderance of
depictions of Virgins and saints, attesting to the spread of Catholicism in
the region, but often these come with a distinctly regional flavour.
 √American Colonial Art Period (1898-1946

 Neoclassicism in Philippine Architecture like "The White House",

 Neoclassical building is symmetrical shape, tall columns, triangular
pediment and have domed roof. The Manila Post Office Building is
considered one of the most beautiful buildings in the Philippines.
 √Post-Colonial Period (1946-1986)/Contemporary Period (1986-Present)

 Guillermo Tolentino’s famous artwork "Bonifacio Monument"

 It is a memorial monument in Caloocan, Philippines. It recalls the
Philippine Revolution which was spearheaded by Andres Bonifacio who
had urged his men to raise against the colonial rule of spain.
