A community is a social unit with a shared socially significant characteristic, such as place, set of norms,
culture, religion, values, customs, or identity. Communities may share a sense of place situated in a given
geographical area.
Primary Health Centres (PHCs), which are under The National Health Mission (NHM) sometimes referred to
as Public Health Centres, are state-owned rural and urban health care facilities. They are essentially
single-physician clinics (small clinics) usually with facilities for first aid, conducting primary and initial
diagnosis of the patient, and referring to further medical treatment if required. They are part of the
government-funded public health system in India and are the most basic units of this system. In India, they
cater to a population of 30,000 in plain areas and 20,000 in hilly and tribal areas.
PHC is the most inclusive, equitable, cost-effective and efficient approach to enhance people’s physical
and mental health, as well as social well-being. PHC is also critical to make health systems more resilient to
situations of crisis and more proactive in detecting early signs of epidemics. PHC acts as the “front door” of
the healthcare system and provides the foundation for the strengthening of the essential public health
functions to confront public health crises. They also create awareness and facilitate vaccination camps,
and provide basic healthcare that is sensitive to the needs of the community.
PHC in a social structure is rooted in a commitment to social justice, equity, solidarity and participation. It is
based on the recognition that the enjoyment of the highest attainable standard of health is one of the
fundamental rights of every human being without distinction.
AIM : To develop an inclusive, barrier-free, climate-sensitive primary health care facility for

● To design considering the site orientation & climate conditions.
● To be cognizant of the user group. Understand their requirements, needs and patterns.
● To perceive function as the driving force to define spaces. Followed by form development.
● To define circulation & movement patterns.
● To develop an understanding towards Hierarchy of spaces. (Public-Semi public-Private

The site is located at Aarey colony. The Colony is a neighbourhood situated in Goregaon (East), a suburb
of the city of Mumbai, India. It was established in 1949 to revolutionize the processing and marketing of
dairy products in the city. Aarey forest in the vicinity is the buffer zone between SGNP and the city. On 3rd
September 2020, the Maharashtra government declared one-fifth of the Aarey Colony, an area of
approximately 600 acres, as a reserved forest. Aarey forest is a biodiversity hotspot with many endangered
species.
Within Aarey there are around 27 tribal hamlets (known as padas in Marathi) and other smaller hamlets in
Aarey. Some of the tribes that the original inhabitants belong to are Katkaris, Mahadev Kolis, Malhar Koli
and Warlis. The tribals in the area farm and cultivate various fruits and vegetables which are sold in markets
for a livelihood.
