Problem 1 (30 pts)
Consider a causal LTI system that is described by the following difference equation:
5 1
y[n] + y[n − 1] − y[n − 2] = x[n] + x[n − 1]
14 14
a) (10 pts) Find the frequency response, H(Ω).
b) (10 pts) Find the magnitude and angle of the frequency response, |H(Ω)| and ∠H(Ω).
c) (10 pts) Assume that the signal x[n] = cos(0.1πn) + ej0.2πn is passed through the
system, what would be the output y[n]?

Problem 2 (30 pts)
Consider the periodic signal
(
1 0≤n≤L
x[n] = and x[n + N ] = x[n]
0 L<n<N
a) (10 pts) Find the DTFS representation of this signal in its simplest form.
c) (10 pts) If L = 5 and N = 15, find the fraction of the power contained in the frequency
range 0 ≤ Ω ≤ π/2.

Problem 3 (20 pts)
The frequency response of an ideal low-pass filter whose impulse response is h[n] is

Problem 4 (20 pts)
The convolution of a finite sequences x[n] with the impulse response h[n] of a finite-impulse-
response (FIR) system can be written in matrix form y = Hx, where H is a matrix, x and
y are input and output signals, respectively. Let h[n] = (1/3)(δ[n] + δ[n − 1] + δ[n − 2]) and
x[n] = 2δ[n] + δ[n − 1].
a) (10 pts) Determine H and x. Compute the values of y[n] using the matrix equation.
b) (10 pts) Use the DFT matrix representation X = Wx and the orthogonality properties
of W to obtain an expression for the DFT of y, denoted by Y, in terms of W, H and
X.
