QUESTION 1
Figure Q1 shows an advertisement board located near a highway in an urban area of Georgetown. By
considering wind acting normal to the surface of the advertisement board, determine the overturning
moment and shear base of the advertisement board.
Given:
Md, Ms and Mh = 1.0
Importance Factor = 1.0
Area of Reduction Factor, Ka = 1.0
Local Net Pressure Factor, Kl = 1.0
Porous Cladding Reduction Factor, Kp = 1.0

QUESTION 2
Figure Q2(i) and Figure Q2(ii) show the side and cross-sectional view of the 15-meter length plate
girder. The plate girder has to carry a permanent load of 15kN/m (including an allowance for its self-
weight) and a variable load of 25kN/m. Determine the maximum shear capacity of the plate girder. The
steel grade of the plate girder is S355.

QUESTION 3
Figure Q3 shows the floor plan layout for the office building. The building will be constructed using a
composite system using normal concrete with grade fck = 30N/mm2 and steel grade S355.
a) Propose the suitable size of the steel beam to cater for the loading imposed on the composite steel
beam. Given the gk = 4.8 kN/m2.
(5 marks)
b) Determine the resistance of the shear connector for the proposed composite steel beam. Given
reduction factor = 1.0 and Ecm = 31GPa. You may refer to the given product datasheet for more info
to design for a shear connector.
(5 marks)
c) Determine the minimum degree of shear connector for the composite steel beam and assess the
ductility capacity of the shear connector. Does the shear connector provide adequate ductility for
the composite steel beam design? Take: hc = 149 mm and beff = 1750 mm.
