Note On Hydroponics
Note On Hydroponics
Problem statement:
Especially during the quarantine of Sirohi breeds the team on ground faced huge shortage of fodder
(Rain fed area) in critical times of medication and bought the fodder with a bit high cost (along with
transportation expenditures). If we observe very closely into community, we can see that livestock
farmer struggles a lot to get appropriate and sufficient fodder for his livestock's (goats, buffalos,
cows, ox etc.….). During summer the availability of Fodder/Green fodder seems difficult where
hydroponic solution plays a critical role in fodder & Nutrition supply for livestock management.
Since we know that the land fragmentation has become a major issue, due to which the farmer is
not being able to cultivate enough fodder – which is directly proportional to improvement of mass/
yield of livestock (weight in case of goatery; milk yield in case of cows). Its like farmers are running in
darkness by taking their livestock for open grazing, which might be a risk factor from health
perspective. The introduction of Solar powered hydroponics system reduces such risks and provides
nutrients rich fodder by consuming less space and provide maximum output in 8 to 10 days timeline.
Various types of seeds can be used in hydroponics, based on the geography / climatic conditions the
inputs can be suggested without effecting health conditions of livestock.
Technical specifications:
The piloting of feasible and customized solution at grassroot levels is much needed at Yadgir/North
KR region, since the solution can be utilized collectively to augmenting livestock intervention and
enhancement of small holders’ incomes. In future engagements, we can have a comparative analysis
on normal feed Vs Hydroponics green fodder feed for goats (/milking animals) in terms of increase in
mass/weight gain converting in terms of incomes to scale up the DRE technology. We can also look
through enterprise development dimensions, where the sales of green fodder can be executed at
village levels itself (Ex Rs. Per tray based_it’s been practicing in different parts of KR and need to get
details) it will be an additional source of income for keep the day-to-day expenditures of hydroponic
farmer. There is also a provision to cultivate mushrooms in the same hydroponics system, which can
Kalike_Innovations_Livelihoods Intervention
help farmers to earn through it – even “Hydrogreens” helps the farmers to support for market
linkage part through which from the health perspective, the promotion of mushroom consumption
can be done slowly on grounds. As we know that at Yadgir the health index is bit low – the
mushroom cultivation activity can contribute its best to tackle such issues at grounds.
Since we are also working of solar powered Panchagavya unit, the rich waste/manure of livestock
can be utilized effectively for the preparation of organic input such as Panchagavya and
Jeevamrutha, where the soil and plant health will be in good condition.
