Science Activity

The document describes an activity to teach students about the parts of an atom and states of matter. Students will create models of atoms and place them in diagrams representing solids, liquids, and gases to demonstrate the characteristics of each state. They will then present and discuss their models and the properties of the different states of matter.

TEACHING SCIENCE IN THE ELEMENTARY GRADES-PHYSICS

ACTIVITY #1

WHAT'S THE MATTER

I. OBJECTIVES:

At the end of the activity, the students will be able to:

a.) Level the parts of an atom;

b.) identify and explain the characteristics of each states of matter; and

c.) explain atom as a basic unit of matter.

HYPOTHESIS: Any matter is composed of an atom and an atom has three parts which are protons,
neutrons and electrons.

II. MATERIALS: pictures, clay, strips of papers

III. PROCEDURE/LEARNING TASKS:

Step 1: Prepare all the materials needed for the activity.

Step 2: Each pair will label the parts of an atom. Use the yellow clay as the nucleus.

Step 3: Form a smaller circle shape of blue clays as the protons(+) and green clays as the neutrons.

Step 4: Place the protons and neutrons inside the nucleus.

Step 5: Create bigger circle shape of red clay than the nucleus.

Step 6: Place the nucleus at the center of the red clay.

Step 7: Create another circle shape of pink clay (a bit smaller size than the protons and neutrons)
which will serve as the electrons(-) and place it outside the nucleus.

Step 8: Create 5 models of atom to be used in the next step.

Step 9: Each pair will pick (a picture) one example of state of matter and define wether it is solid,
liquid or gas.

Step 10: Describe it's characteristics( tightly packed particles, particles have some space between
them and they are not in a fixed position, or particles move freely from another).

Step 11: Place and arrange the finished models of atoms(particles) inside the picture of the matter
according to it's characteristic.

Step 12: Present to the class the finished output and have a short discussion about the activity

IV. ACTIVITY PROPER

Each pair will discuss their output by using the table below. First is the finish model of an atom.

Parts of an atom Location Style

2.

3.

Next is to discuss the chosen example of matter assigned to each pair.

Question 1: What does matter composed of?

Question 2: Why atom is the basic unit of matter?
