MEE 407: HEAT AND MASS TRANSFER TUTORIAL/ASSIGNMENT QUESTIONS

PROBLEM SET 2
HEAT CONDUCTION EQUATION

Answer Questions 3, 4 and 5

1 Consider a large plane wall of thickness L = 0.2 m, thermal conductivity k = 1.2
W/m °C, and surface area A = 15 m2. The two sides of the wall are maintained at
constant temperatures of T1 = 120°C and T2 = 50°C, respectively. Determine (a) the
variation of temperature within the wall and the value of temperature at x = 0.1 m and
(b) the rate of heat conduction through the wall under steady conditions.

2 The left and the right wall of a plate are maintained at temperature T1 and T2
respectively. Given that the thickness of the plate is 2L as shown in Fig. Ques. (2b), and
that there is a uniform heat generation q within the plate, derive for a steady heat
transfer problem in one-dimension:
(i) the expression for the temperature profile T as a function of x
(ii) the heat transfer per unit area, q/A, at the left wall
(iii) the heat transfer per unit area, q/A, at the right wall
(iv) the heat transfer per unit area, q/A, at the plate centre

3 Consider a plane wall of thickness 2 cm with uniform heat internal conversion of

energy, q  40 MW m 3 . Assuming constant thermal conductivity, k  200 W m  K , and
very large dimensions in the y- and z-direction so that the temperature gradient is
significant in the x-direction only. Given that the temperature at the left side of the wall,
T1  160  C and that at the right side, T2  100  C determine:
(i) The temperature distribution T(x) along the cross-section of the wall;
(ii) The heat transfer q A at the left face;
(iii) The heat transfer q A at the right face; and
(iv) The heat transfer q A at the centre face.
4 Consider a large plane wall of thickness L = 0.3 m, thermal conductivity k = 2.5
W/m °C, and surface area A = 12 m2. The left side of the wall at x = 0 is subjected to a
net heat flux of q0 = 700 W/m2 while the temperature at that surface is measured to be
T1 = 80°C. Assuming constant thermal conductivity and no heat generation in the wall,
(a) express the differential equation and the boundary conditions for steady one-
dimensional heat conduction through the wall, (b) obtain a relation for the variation of
temperature in the wall by solving the differential equation, and (c) evaluate the
temperature of the right surface of the wall at x = L.

5 Consider a large plane wall of thickness L = 0.05 m. The wall surface at x = 0 is

insulated, while the surface at x = L is maintained at a temperature of 30°C. The thermal
conductivity of the wall is k = 30 W/m · °C, and heat is generated in the wall at a rate of
g  g o e 0.5 x L W/m3 where g0 = 8 x 106 W/m3. Assuming steady one-dimensional heat
transfer, (a) express the differential equation and the boundary conditions for heat
conduction through the wall, (b) obtain a relation for the variation of temperature in the
wall by solving the differential equation, and (c) determine the temperature of the
insulated surface of the wall.
