Reflection
After almost two months of Practice Teaching,
it is expected that we should have learned
something from the experience, particularly about
what it takes to be a good teacher, regardless of
the school to which Student Teachers are assigned
(in my case, DQ Liwag National High School) or
the type of students (Grade 10 - Charity and
Solidarity) or teachers with whom they interact
as they carry out their duties.
In our Practice Teaching, we experienced
everything a professional teacher goes through,
including lesson planning, lesson review,
completing out forms, and dealing with students
of various personalities and abilities. Also, in
my experience, I have been lucky to have had the
assistance and mentorship of my Coordinating
Teacher, Sir Sandro Dalida.
I admit that it was challenging at initially to
catch pupils' attention so that I could
effectively teach them. Though I am confident in
my knowledge of the subject, teaching pupils is a
very different story, especially when they are
unwilling to listen. That is why presenting a
pleasant personality and attitude in class is
essential. When teachers perform at their best,
students are more likely to listen to them and
learn to respect their efforts. Of course, when
things get out of hand, teachers should exert
themselves so that pupils remember their
teachers' authority. Based on the teachers I've
spoken with, teachers should keep a space between
themselves and their kids since a teacher should
not be treated like a barkada.
Reflection
I felt bothered by the mistakes that I had made
in school. My Coordinating Teacher constantly
tried to point out and explain my mistakes in a
sensitive manner, which I finally adopted into my
discussions with students. It was also comforting
to hear him say that mistakes are part of the
learning process and that I could avoid repeating
them in the future. In contrast, another thing I
learned from him is that in order to motivate
students to do better in class, teachers should
applaud every student's good efforts, such as
right answers or creative outputs.
This experience has led me to the following
quote: "Teaching is a noble profession". This is
true because teachers need to demonstrate
positive characteristics and teach moral values.
We must remember that more than anyone else,
teachers are judged on their character. Teachers
should be the best they can be.
