With a tensile force F as shown in the figure, the calculation of tangential stress in welds
is needed.
The given allowable tangential stress is known as Rpg= 100 N/mm2. Determine the
maximum force Fmaxi can be applied to the structure.
Hints
Notice: dimension 10 mm is really the height of the black triangle (symbol for the
weld)
(1 daN= 10 N)
Solution
Tangential stress caused by shear force F is determined as:
F 10000 2
τ1= = ≈ 16.67 N /mm
a∗l 10(30+30)
Maximum tangential stress at A (or at C) caused by torsion moment about
point O, Mt=10,000*(15+80)=950,000 Nmm, is determined as:
Mt
τ 2=
I u 0∗a
OA
where
OA= √20 2+15 2=25 mm
From the table in appendix, I u 0 is calculated:
2 2 2 2
b(3 d +b ) 30(3∗40 +30 )
I u 0= = =28,500 mm3
6 6
Mt 950,000 2
⇒ τ 2= = ≈ 83.33 N /mm
I u 0∗a 28,500∗10
OA 25
The total tangential stress τ A is taken by performing the sum of the two stress
N N
vectors ⃗ τ 2: τ A ≈ 97
τ 1 and ⃗ τ ≈ 94 .28
