Instructions: Once examination has started, nobody is allowed to go out of the classroom unless done taking the examination. Therefore, it must
always be a reminder that you should have all the necessary requirements before taking the test and had done everything that must be done
before entering the classroom. The use of cellular phone or any gadget is strictly prohibited; it must be turned off.

Problem Solving. Before starting, read the following directions very carefully and with comprehension:
 Please write your solutions clearly/legibly in black ink. No pencils allowed. Erasures are allowed but please
keep your work as clean as possible.
 Show all your solutions to receive credit. Clearly enclose your final answer with a box around it.
 Do not round until the final answer. Write your final answers with 4 decimal points and proper rounding.
 Points will be deducted for not following the format and instructions.

1. A cascade refrigerating system uses R717 in the low-temperature unit and R134a in the high-temperature unit. The
system develops 28 kW of refrigeration at -35°C. The refrigerant 134a system operates at -10°C evaporating
temperature and 1 MPa condensing pressure. There is a 10-degree overlap of temperatures in the cascade
condenser. Both units utilize superheating and subcooling by 5°. Determine the amount of heat rejected to the
surrounding and EER of the system. 30 pts

2. An ammonia refrigeration plant with two-stage compression uses a water-cooled heat exchanger as an intercooler.
The evaporator temperature is -20°C and the condenser temperature is 20°C. Water enters the intercooler at 8°C
and leaves at 22°C. The refrigerant enters the intercooler at intermediate pressure and leaves with a temperature
equal to 5°C. If the refrigerant enters the low-pressure compressor at -15°C with a mass flow rate of 0.5 kg/s,
determine the mass flow rate of water entering the intercooler. Compare the work net required with/without the
utilization of the intercooler. 30 pts

3. In an ammonia system, one evaporator is to provide refrigeration at -30°C and another at 5°C. 10,000 kgs of
material A with a freezing point of -10°C, latent heat of fusion equal to 500 kJ/kg and a specific heat of 5 kJ/kg°C
above freezing point and 2.5 kJ/kg°C below freezing point is to be cooled from -5°C to -28°C. The other evaporator
has a capacity of 65 TOR. The system uses two-stage compression with flash tank as shown below. The condensing
temperature is 40°C. Calculate the minimum power required by the compressors if both compressors has an
isentropic efficiency of 85%. 40 points
