Problem Statement

The document outlines a problem statement involving distributing water to a town using either a gravity or pump system. It provides details on pipe length, diameter, material and flow conditions. The objective is to propose the distribution using the Darcy-Weisbach or Hazen-Williams methods. It then shows calculations for head loss using these methods on sample pipe loops to solve the water distribution design problem using the Hardy-Cross method.

Problem Statement:

A town has certain population and there is a need to distribute water by either gravity
system or pump system as shown in figure below. Velocity of flow of water is based on
diameter of pipe. Pipe is made of ordinary cast iron. Head loss will be calculated either by
Darcy Weisbach method or Hazen Willian approach. Use Hardy-Cross method to propose
distribution of water by following data:

Roll number = 40

Length of each pipe (m) = Roll number x 100

Diameter of each pipe (cm) = Roll number x 10

Objective:

The aim of this study is to propose the distribution of water in the town by using any
method between Darcy Weisbach method or Hazen William method.
Tasks Details

1. Calculate k from either method

2. Calculate Hf from either method

3. Design water distribution in each loop by considering common pipe in each case by Hardy Cross
method (trial and error procedure).
Roll number: 40
Length of Pipe = 4000 m
Diameter of Pipe = 400 cm
Type of Pipe = Cast Iron
Condition = Ordinary pipe
