Title: Volumetric Analysis-Standard Solution

Aim: To prepare a standard solution of sodium carbonate (Na2CO3)

Apparatus:

1. Beaker

2. Wash bottle

3.Funnel

4. Spatula

5. Dropper

6. Electronic Balance

7. Glass Rod

8. Volumetric Flask (250cm³)

9. Distilled Water

10. Sodium Carbonate (Na2CO3)

Method:

1. An empty beaker was weighed using an electronic balance and the mass was recorded.

2. Approximately 2.65g of Sodium Carbonate (Na2CO3) was added to the beaker whilst on the electronic
balance. The new weight was recorded.

3. The (Na₂CO₃) was dissolved in 50cm³ of distilled water and stirred with a glass rod.

4. The solution was then transferred to a 250cm³ volumetric flask using a funnel.

5. A wash bottle was used to add water to the volumetric flask until it reached the 250cm³ mark.

6. All observations were recorded.

7. The molar and mass concentration of the solution was calculated.

a) First the Mass Concentration of Na2CO3 was calculated

b) Then the Molecular Mass of Na2CO3, was calculated

c) Then the Molar Concentration of Na2CO3 was calculated

Observations:

In the experiment it was observed that when the water was added to the sodium carbonate, clumps of
sodium carbonate were still visible and the mixture was cloudy. After stirring the mixture with the glass
rod the solution become clearer and after a few minutes of stirring it was ready to be transferred into
the volumetric flask.

Weight Of the empty beaker = 49.5g

Weight of the beaker with Na2CO3 in it =52.15g

Treatment Of Results:

Weight Of Empty Beaker Weight Of beaker with Na2CO3 Weight Of Na2CO3

49.5 g 52.1 g 2.6g

Discussion:

A standard solution is a substance of known concentration that is used as for reference or

comparison in a chemical analysis. Two methods used to prepare standard solutions are: Volumetric
Analysis is a chemical procedure used for determining the concentration of a solution or a quantity of a
substance. It usually titrating a volume of a solution with a known concentration against a volume of a
solution of unknown concentration. Gravimetric Method is a method used to prepare a standard
solution by accurately weighing a known amount of pure substance and dissolving it in a solvent to
obtain a specific concentration. The weight of the substance is determined using a balance, and the
concentration is calculated based on the molar mass and volume of the solution. This experiment used
the gravimetric method. Mass concentration is the mass of the solvent, measured in grams, divided by
the volume of the of the mixture. Concentration=Mass(g)/Volume(dm³). Molecular mass is the sum of all
the atomic masses of the molecule. Molar concentration is the number of moles divided the volume of
the substance.

Precautions:

1. It was ensured that a wash bottle was used to add water to the flask.

Sources of Error:

1. Impurities present in the water

Conclusion:

It can be concluded that the Mass concentration of Na2CO3=10.4 gdm-3, the molecular mass of
Na2CO3=106 gmol-1 and the Molar Concentration of Na2CO3=0.096 moldm-3
