Description: Laboratory experience to accompany CH 221 or CH 220. Introduction to basic organic laboratory equipment
and techniques. Prerequisites: CH 101 and CH 102

Learning Outcomes:

Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to:

1. Become aware of the safety procedures and regulations that must be observed when performing organic chemistry
experiments in a laboratory.

2. Perform simple separations using Thin Layer Chromatography.

3. Determine melting points and boiling points and use them to characterize organic compounds.

4. Perform Infrared Spectroscopy and use the results obtained to identify organic compounds.

5. Accomplish the separation of predetermined chemical mixtures by using liquid-liquid extraction and microextraction.

6. Complete small-scale synthesis of simple organic materials and characterize the products obtained using a variety of
techniques.

Required Materials

Course Materials All course materials are on WebAssign and Moodle. The WebAssign course KEY and
directions for how to purchase and access the lab manual and assignments for each lab
is posted on the Moodle course site. No other textbooks or lab notebooks are

Attendance Policy

Excused Absences: Documentation is required to verify an excused absence. Please send absence verifications from DASA
to your TA (https://dasa.ncsu.edu/support-and-advocacy/find-help/absence-verification/). Contact your TA or lab director
as soon as possible to coordinate a lab make up. If you miss a lab due to unforeseen circumstances, you must contact your
TA or lab director within 24 hours for an excused absence. If you cannot attend 4 out of 5 labs in person, it could result in
an incomplete (IN), failure (F) or the course be dropped.

Unexcused Absences: An unexcused absence for one lab will result in a score of 0 for that lab. Missing two or more labs
for unexcused reasons will result in an F. There are no make-ups for unexcused absences.

For complete attendance and excused absence policies, please see http://policies.ncsu.edu/regulation/reg-02-20-03

Course Policies
1. At all times in the laboratory, you must wear approved safety goggles, which are provided for you.
2. You must wear closed-toe shoes; you may not wear sandals or other open-toe shoes.
3. Pants/Skirts that completely cover the legs are the only appropriate “below the waist” coverage for working in
the laboratory.
4. You must wear a top that covers the shoulders and your upper torso; tank tops, tube tops are not acceptable
for working in the laboratory.
5. You may not eat, drink, or chew gum in the laboratory.
6. Students who are pregnant or become pregnant while taking this lab should see the lab coordinator as soon as
possible.
Requirements for Credit-Only (S/U), Incompletes (IN) and Audit (AU)

Audits: To obtain a grade of AU in the course, the student must take ALL labs and quizzes. Information about and
requirements for auditing a course can be found at http://policies.ncsu.edu/regulation/reg-02-20-04.

Credit Only: In order to receive a grade of S, students are required to take all quizzes, complete all assignments, and
earn a grade of C- or better. Conversion from letter grading to credit only (S/U) grading is subject to university
deadlines. Refer to the Registration and Records calendar for deadlines related to grading. For more details refer to
http://policies.ncsu.edu/regulation/reg-02-20-15.

Incompletes: If an extended deadline is not authorized by the instructor or department, an unfinished incomplete grade
will automatically change to an F after either (a) the end of the next regular semester in which the student is enrolled (not
including summer sessions), or (b) the end of 12 months if the student is not enrolled, whichever is shorter. Incompletes
that change to F will count as an attempted course on transcripts. The burden of fulfilling an incomplete grade is the
responsibility of the student. The university policy on incomplete grades is located at
http://policies.ncsu.edu/regulation/reg-02-50-3.

Census date: Monday, January 22 is the last day to drop a course without a W grade.

Drop/Revision Deadline: Monday, March 4 is the last day to change to credit only and the last day to drop with a W
grade on MyPackPortal. After this date, modifications to your status in this class are determined by the COS Late
Schedule Revision Policy. A full description of this policy can be found at https://sciences.ncsu.edu/academics/academic-
policies-and-procedures/. Dropping specific courses (or changing to CR or AU) after this deadline is considered only for
unforeseen and unavoidable extenuating personal situations (not poor performance).

Academic Integrity and Honesty

Students are required to comply with the university policy on academic integrity found in the Code of Student Conduct
found at http://policies.ncsu.edu/policy/pol-11-35-01. The university has procedures in place for academic integrity
violations. On each exam, students will be required to acknowledge the University Honor Pledge: “I have neither given
nor received unauthorized aid on this test or assignment.”

See http://policies.ncsu.edu/policy/pol-11-35-01 for a detailed explanation of academic honesty

University Policies

Accommodations for Disabilities: Reasonable accommodations will be made for students with verifiable disabilities. In
order to take advantage of available accommodations, students must register with the Disability Resource Office at
Holmes Hall, Suite 304, 2751 Cates Avenue, Campus Box 7509, 919-515-7653. For more information on NC State’s policy
on working with students with disabilities, please see the Academic Accommodations for Students with Disabilities
Regulation (REG02.20.01).

Supporting Fellow Students in Distress: As members of the NC State Wolfpack community, we each share a personal
responsibility to express concern for one another and to ensure that the classroom and the campus as a whole remains a
safe environment for learning. Occasionally, you may come across a fellow classmate whose personal behavior concerns
or worries you. If this is the case, you are encouraged to report this behavior to the NC State Cares website. Although
you can report anonymously, it is preferred that you share your contact information so they can follow-up with you
personally. Students are responsible for reviewing the NC State University PRR’s which pertains to their course rights
and responsibilities:
 Equal Opportunity and Non-Discrimination Policy Statement
 Code of Student Conduct
 Grades and Grade Point Average

Health and Well-Being Resources

These are difficult times, and academic and personal stress are natural results. Everyone is encouraged to take care of
themselves and their peers. If you need additional support, there are many resources on campus to help you:
 Counseling Center (NCSU Counseling Center)
 Student Health Services (Health Services | Student)
 If the personal behavior of a classmate concerns or worries you, either for the classmate’s well-being or yours,
we encourage you to report this behavior to the NC State CARES team: (Share a Concern).
 If you or someone you know are experiencing food, housing or financial insecurity, please see the Pack
Essentials Program (Pack Essentials).
