Answer All Questions

Question 1 (10 marks)

Draw and annotate the algebraic difference for each possible gradient combination for the
vertical curves.

Question 2 (20 marks)

A vertical sag curve 220 m long connects a falling gradient of 5 in 100 and a rising gradient of
3 in 100. The RL and chainage of the gradient intersection point (I) is 90m and 500.00m
respectively.
Calculate the reduced level (RL) of the points at 20 m interval along the curve.

Chainage (m) x Offset (m) y offset Point Curve RL (m)

Question 3 (Total: 30 marks)

A new highway section is to go through undulating land over 10km. The volumes of cut and
fill to create the flat freeway are shown below.
Fill in the following MHD Table (18 Marks)

End Chainage (m) Area (m2) Volume (m3) Cum Volume (m3)

15250.52 0
16250.52 137
15251.52 250
16251.52 -1250
15252.52 -265
16252.52 -450
15253.52 1200
16253.52 270
15254.52 -192
16254.52 300
15255.52 0

Plot the above MHD and use it to fill out the following table knowing that the free haul
diagram distance is 3000 m

Overhaul Station m = (4 Marks)

Freehaul Station m = (4 Marks)
What is the total cost if $ (4 Marks)
Overhaul cost is
$1.25/station m and
freehaul is $ 0.75/station

Question 4 (20 marks)

It is required to join two straights lines having a total deflection angle 18˚ 36’ right by a
circular curve of 450 m radius, having transition curves at each end. The design velocity is 70
km/h, and the rate of change of radial acceleration along the transition curve is not to exceed
0.3 m/s3. Chainage at I is 2524.20 m.

(a) Determine length of required transition curve.

(b) Calculate shift.
(c) Calculate tangent length.
(d) Calculate deflection angles to set out the transition curve TT1 from T using 10 m chord
lengths.

Question 5 (10 marks)

The following offsets were taken at 24m intervals from a survey line to an irregular boundary
line 4.6, 5.9, 7.5, 6.3, 4.5, 7.5, 5.3, 8.5, 6.5 and 5.7.
Calculate the area enclosed between the survey lines, the irregular boundary line and the
offsets by the following methods:
The trapezoidal rule (5 marks)
Simpson’s rule (5 marks)

Question 6 (10 marks)

Calculate the minimum radius of a curved road considering comfort and

superelevation/friction for a 130km/hr freeway.

The superelevation angle is 1/14.5 and P/W=0.23.
