a) i) Mfecane: inter-tribal wars in Southern Africa between 1810 and1840’s. [1]

b) Explain two challenges of the 1934 Native Administration Proclamation in relation


to the powers of the Tswana Dikgosi.

- The resident Commissioner could appoint/ disapprove a kgosi -this was against
a saying “a kgosi is born a born” [4]

- Resident commissioner could suspend, banish and depose a kgosi

- A tribal council was formed to replace a kgotla

- Dikgosi could only rule with the consent of the tribal council

- Dikgosi could only collect tax/ tribute from his people with permission of the
Resident Commissioner

- Dikgosi were forced to obey the instructions of the Resident Commissioner

Countries (OPEC) decreases petrol prices, Botswana buy it at a lower price.

- Financial assistance/ technical assistance by World Bank, International


Monetary Fund

- Increase in foreign investment- leads to creation of employment
