marking a rich history of immigrant homesteaders that
once made Opheim a thriving town of 3,000 residents
and businesses providing services to all of north Valley
County.
Opheim has a great history in high school girls
and boys basketball. The girls won three straight state
Class C championships from 1982-84. The Vikings have
played in a few championships. The boys have also gone
to state and played in a title game.
Opheim still has a few businesses, but it’s mostly a
farm and ranch community. And, the town still holds a
rodeo every year.
Note from the Buzz: The Opheim Radar Base which
Mike mentioned, it was a rather cool place. Myself, the
old Buzzard from the Buzz, made friendships with the
kids that would go to school in Opheim, but they would
come and they would go. There was a, I don’t know,
kind of a town hall at the base that Mom and I would go
to play BINGO once in a while and it was a real treat to
do that because we’d always order a frozen pizza (it got
baked of course) and yum, yum, yum, eating pizza off of
a piece of cardboard.
Opy Opheim who grew up in, you guessed it,
Opheim (you know where his name came from Mike’s
article) told me the story that they used to have a yearly
barbecue at the Opheim Radar Base, a big line of open
pit grills, and according to Opy, it was the best chicken
he ever ate. If you run into Opy, you’ll have to ask him
about it.
Oh, and then me and the family, including the
cats, moved south to Wheeler, when I was in the 6th
grade our class took a field trip up to the Opheim Radar
Base. Been there, done that, I thought, but boy oh boy
did they serve us some darn good burgers and fries. I
was hoping for one of those frozen pizzas though.
