Cattle at Large

I’ve always
considered the “Cattle
at Large” signs to be
rather cute and very, very
Montana. I’d be wrong.
Turns out Cattle at Large
is a big, big deal!
Let’s start small, or
rather, not large. You’ll
like this. According to
Al Overview, any animal
that is “at large” is not,
you know, big. They are
roaming free. It comes
from the French term
au large which means
“at liberty” or “free from
restraint.”
And this can apply
to humans, too. Escaped
prisoners are at large.
Who knew?
Many years ago
when I moved to
Montana I gave this sign
very little real notice. I
considered it to be like
a “slippery when wet”
or “construction workers

Sure enough, within
minutes he had delivered
another little baby.
A man and a woman had been married for more
than 60 years. They had shared everything. They had
kept no secrets from each other except that the little old
woman had a shoe box in the top of her closet that she
had cautioned her husband never to open or ask her
about.
For all of these years, he had never thought about
the box, but one day the little old woman got very sick M
and the doctor said she would not recover. In trying to
sort out their affairs, the little old man took down the
shoe box and took it to his wife’s bedside.
She agreed that it was time that he should know
what was in the box. When he opened it, he found two
crocheted dolls and a stack of money totaling $95,000.
He asked her about the contents.
“When we were to be married,” she said, “my
grandmother told me the secret of a happy marriage
was to never argue. She told me that if I ever got angry
with you, I should just keep quiet and crochet a doll.”
The little old man was so moved; he had to fight
back tears. Only two precious dolls were in the box.
She had only been angry with him two times in all
those years of living and loving. He almost burst with
happiness.
“Honey,” he said “that explains the doll, but what
about all of this money? Where did it come from?”
“Oh, that?” she said. “That’s the money I made from
selling all those darned dolls.”

Cattle at Large continued
A friendly little reminder to keep
your eyes on the road because there’s
gonna be cattle out there. I’d heard stories
of near misses of trucks and cattle and
seen first hand when it wasn’t a miss. I
truly never gave “cattle at large” or “open
range” any more thought than that.
Maybe as a non-rancher or landowner
that was all I needed to know.
Only 5 states, all western, allow
livestock to roam in remote areas.
Texas, Kansas, Nebraska, Wyoming
and yup, Montana have open range or
“fence laws” that regulate cattle at large.
In these remote areas landowner must
fence out their land to keep the critters
out. Not the other way around. “Remote
Areas” would be the catch phrase here.
You don’t have to worry about ole Bessy
gettin’ into the pumpkin patch in town.
As you can imagine, there’s been
lots of controversy over the years about
free range cattle. Controversy leading
to lawsuits and, dare I say, sometimes
probably even more drastic. Folks with
smaller tracks of property in these remote
areas would have to either “put up” with
cattle in the corn or “fence up” to keep
them out. And fencing is expensive.
It seems that sometimes more
neighborly solutions would be better
than lawsuits or, the worse part. I read
of about a case where the landowner of
a smaller-ish tract didn’t object to the
cattle on his land, but thought the cattle
owner was trespassing when he came
to round them up. That seems a bit like
splitting hairs to me. I suspect there was
more to it than that. Still, I’m definitely
not a legal eagle. I’m sure they both had
a point.
I’ll probably never live in these
remote area’s so I guess I’ll remain
blissfully unaware of these conflicts. I’ll It seems that there are some long-legged moose at large in the area as
travel the roads and try to be diligent well, as Duke and Cindy Nieskens were taking a drive on the Tampico
and aware of my surroundings. I’ll have Highway and watched Mama Moose with her twins trotting across at
more respect to the “Cattle at Large” the Milk River Bridge, although this was a couple of weeks ago. Duke
though. It really is a big deal. and Cindy recently moved back to Glasgow. Welcome home!
