Question D1:
Dear Sir/Madam
I have just read your latest magazine and I would like to provide my insight to the topic. It is a fascinating
topic to discuss, riddled with pros and cons a conclusion to weather or not if technology has harmed
society or benefited cannot be settled.
I rely on technology more than anything any other medium. Books have now become E-Books. Messages
now texts. Interaction is now through video calls. The impact the internet and technology has made on
me is undeniable.
The internet is the largest library to be constructed. If we see the struggles people at the past struggled
just to protect their information (book), we would see how easy we had it. We have almost no restrict
access to any piece of information we desire. This amount of information has benefited many people.
For example, when I was at the midst of a war, I couldn’t go to school. I missed 2 whole years because of
tragedy. But I was determined not to make this time waste in vain. I dedicated myself and studied by the
means of the internet.
But sometimes unrestricted information can be dangerous. The internet is filled with dangerous media
that could impact people’s mental health. Many of these thing’s include: pornography, violent content,
hate speech, illegal activities.
The main issue of technology in my opinion is the parents’ unawareness to what their children are
exposed to at a young age. These harmful things impact a child’s psychological wellbeing. Not only is
harmful content adverse for children but also the entertainment side. The main damage that content in
the internet causes to children is destroying their time spans. Children are no longer patient, not willing
to learn and constantly procrastinating. I have experienced many of these challenges as a kid, without
the knowledge of my parents. As a teen I express my caution to parents and urge them to at least try and
restrict this harmful content, so that they would not damage their children’s mental health.
The internet is a means of communications like none. It provides instantaneous connections to people
weather through analog or digital signals. This has done wonders for the world. It has made the whole
world into practically a village. Many people can now make reservations, make appointments, run
businesses, shop, all in one device at the comfort of there homes. It has boosted the economy, made
such wonderous scientific breakthroughs and more.
99% of the internet provides us with a more or less safe way of communications. But the 1% is the dark
web. Perhaps the most atrocious thing to come out of the internet. It has provided a safe haven for
criminals, terrorists, and fraudsters. It has made people hide behind the internet with their terrible
inhumane acts. For example, the dark web provides: Child pornography, and provides a means to
communicate for human traffickers, and drug traffickers. Many would argue were it not for the internet
those types of unhuman acts wouldn’t have been on the level they are at now.
The internet is the most brilliant, most fascinating, most atrocious, most hostile, most active, most
complex invention that humans created. The dilemma of weather the internet’s pros outweighs the cons
or the opposite cannot be stated. It will and forever stay.
