MAPS AND PLANS


I. PRE-WRITING
1. Definition and Characteristics
- Maps are used in IELTS to describe the physical layout of a location in addition to showing
changes over time.
- They can be maps of a city, a university, a park, or an island. There might also be plans for a
shopping center, an office building, or a factory floor.
- The maps often include:
+ a key (a legend) that explains certain features and symbols on the maps,
+ the scale (a distance marker) of the maps (e.g. in kilometers)
+ a compass arrow to show direction (North/ South/ East/ West)

- An example of an IELTS Task 1 – maps and plans:


The two plans below show the City Library in 2004 and 2014.
Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features and make
comparisons where relevant. Write at least 150 words.

2. General outline for a map/plan report


Outline of a map report
Explain in your own words what the map(s)/plan(s) show(s) by
paraphrasing the question in 1 sentence.
Introduction: Make sure that your introduction can answer these questions:
Information about the map 1. What do the maps show or represent?
2. What time period is reported?
3. What place is reported?

Overview:
Report the most general changes/ differences that have taken

3. Language for Writing
3.1. Introduction

3.2. Overview
To write an overview for maps, you should look at ALL the changes/ differences and classify
them into the following groups:
 residential area
 industrial zone
 entertainment facilities
 tourism facilities
 transportation facilities
 green space
Generally, [noun phrase] + see / witness / experience + major changes / striking
transformation / remarkable development / significant modernization. Most noticeably, + [key
changes].
- It can be seen that + [noun phrase] + made many changes during this period, including [key
changes].
- Overall, there are great differences between the two maps, including [key differences].
Example: It can be seen that Ryemouth village made many changes during this period,
including the significant increase in the number of accommodations and the introduction of
sport facilities.
3.3. Body paragraphs (Details)

C. Verbs to describe changes
In maps reports, the verbs used to describe changes are often used in passive voice:

Examples:
- One of the most noticeable changes is the renovation of the Watson Building and Founder’s
Building at the center of the university as they both increased in size.

- Regarding the changes in the southern region, more shops and restaurants were developed
near the night market.

D. Common structures used to describe the maps


a. While S + V + O, S1 + V1 + O1.
E.g: While the two entrances remained unchanged, the registration area was relocated to the
south to make way for a newly built refreshment area.

b. S + V + O, whereas S1 + V1 + O1.
E.g: The balcony on the right-hand side was equipped with a lounge area in 2010, whereas the
nearby exhibition area was expanded and moved to the left-hand side.
4. Analyze a sample report
Task 1. Read the writing task (IELTS PRACTICE TASK , SB - page 227) below and answer
the following questions.
