UNIT 2

Multiplication of Fractions

In the previous unit, you have learned the application of addition and
subtraction of fractions in real-life. In this unit, you will learn how you can
apply multiplication of fractions in our everyday lives.

Some applications of this concept

include calculating areas, determining
the time spent on certain activities,
calculating a fraction of a given
population, and budget computations.

In this unit, you will learn how to use your knowledge of writing mixed
numbers as fractions in finding products. You will also develop further your
skill in simplifying fractions and expressions involving a series of operations.
Lastly, you will learn how to use the knowledge of multiplying fractions in
your daily tasks.

Test Your Prerequisite Skills

• Multiplying Whole Numbers

• Finding the GCF of a Given Set of Numbers
• Simplifying Fractions

Before you get started, answer the following items on a separate sheet of
paper. This will help you practice some skills that you will need in studying
the lessons in this unit. Show your complete solution.

1. Find the value of N.

a. 17 × 3 = N d. 63 × 6 = N
b. 38 × 4 = N e. 86 × 7 = N
c. 48 × 5 = N

2. Determine the greatest common factor (GCF) of each set of numbers.

a. 24, 32, 48
b. 21, 14, 49
c. 30, 15, 60

Objectives
At the end of this unit, you should be able to
• multiply simple fractions and mixed numbers without regrouping;
• multiply simple fractions and mixed numbers with regrouping; and
• solve routine or nonroutine problems involving multiplication of
fractions and mixed fractions using appropriate problem solving
strategies and tools.

Lesson 1: Multiplying Proper Fractions and Whole

Numbers

Warm Up!

Colorful Fractions

Materials Needed: bond paper, ruler, highlighter, or colored pen

Instructions:
You need to work by pair in this activity.
1
1. Multiply 2 by using a tile or area model.
3
2. Create two tiles that are both equally divided by 3.
1
3. Each tile should show the fraction .
3
4. How many shaded part(s) are there? This will represent the numerator
of your final fraction.
4

5. How many equal parts are there in each tile? This will represent the
denominator of your final fraction.
1
6. What is the product of 2 and ?
3
5
7. Apply the same process to 18 × .
6

Learn about It!

Multiplication of fractions is one of the skills that must be mastered in early

mathematics. In Warm Up, you used area model in solving for the product of
a fraction and a whole number. Another method of solving for this product is
shown below. Consider the given word problem.

At Ariel’s Bakery, there are 18 chocolate

5
cakes. Of the chocolate cakes, have
6
chocolate frostings. How many chocolate
cakes at Ariel’s Bakery have chocolate
frostings?

5
To answer the problem, find the product of and 18. To do this, follow the
6
steps below.

Step 1: Express the whole number as a fraction by setting 1 as the

denominator.

6

5 𝟏𝟖
×
6 𝟏

Step 2: Multiply the numerators, and then multiply the denominators.

𝟓 𝟏𝟖 𝟗𝟎
× =
𝟔 𝟏 𝟔

Step 3: Write the answer in lowest term or simplest form.

To do this, determine the greatest common factor (GCF) of the

numerator and the denominator. Use the GCF to simplify the
product. In this case, the GCF is 6.

90 ÷ 6 15
= or 15
6÷6 1

Thus, 15 chocolate cakes at Ariel’s Bakery have chocolate

frostings.

Let’s Practice!

Step 3: Express the answer in lowest term.

252 ÷ 14 18

14 ÷ 14 1

Example 1 can be solved in a much shorter way by cross cancellation. This

technique will allow the greatest common factor to do the work. Take a look
at the solution below.

Alternative Solution:

Write 28 as a fraction.

Since cross cancellation is to be applied, consider the greatest common

factor of the pair 28 and 14.

GCF = 14

Divide 28 by the GCF 14, resulting in 2.

Proceed to multiplication of the numerators and multiplication of the

denominators.

2 9 18

Learn about It!

Multiplying fractions, like the one you did in Warm Up, follows the same steps
you learn in Lesson 1. You simply multiply the numerators and the
denominators then simplify the answer. In this lesson, learn how to multiply
mixed numbers. Consider the problem below.

For their Home Economics class,

2
Joshua bought 2 kilograms (kg) of
5
1
macaroni. He used of it to make
2
macaroni salad. How many
kilograms of macaroni did Joshua use for the salad?

2 1
To answer the problem, you need to find the product of 2 and . Follow
5 2
the steps below.

Step 1: Write the mixed number as an improper fraction.

2 12
2 =
5 5

Step 2: Multiply the numerators. Multiply the denominators.
