Topic : Synchronous Machines Part-1 DPP - 07 Date : 11/05/2022 Daily Practice Problem for Mind Map Question 1 A 6 pole, 50 Hz, 3- alternator has 36 slots. The flux per pole is 0.015 Wb and each full pitched coil has 8 turns. Determine the phase and line emfs in case the coils are connected to form 3-phase star connected winding. Question 2 The stator of 3-phase, 16 pole alternator has 144 slots and there are 4 conductors per slot connected in two layers and conductors of each phase are connected in series. If the speed of the alternator is 375 rpm, calculate the emf induced per phase. Resultant flux in the air gap is 5102 Wb/pole sinusoidally distributed. Assume coil span as 1500 electrical. Question 3 A 4-pole, 3-phase, 50 Hz, star connected alternator has 60 slots with 2 conductors per slot and having armature winding of the double layer type. Coils are short pitched, that is, if one coil side lies in slot number 1, the other coil side lies in slot number 13. Find the useful flux per pole required to induce a line voltage of 6.6 kV. Question 4 A 6 pole, 50Hz alternator has 42 slots with 2 layer winding. The flux per pole is 0.012 Wb and each full layer pitch coil has 8 turns. Determine phase and line emf in case the narrow spread coils are connected to form (a) 2- winding (b) 3- star connected winding. Question 5 In a 50 kVA, star connected, 440 V, 3-phase, 50 Hz alternator, the effective armature resistance is 0.25 per phase. The synchronous reactance is 3.2 per phase and the leakage reactance is 0.5 per phase. Determine at rated load and unity power factor : (i) Internal emf, (ii) No load emf, (iii)Value of the synchronous reactance which replaces armature reaction. If the load current is 500 A, what is the power factor of operation? The machine has a synchronous reactance of 5 and negligible resistance per phase. Question 7 A three phase star connected alternator has an open circuit line voltage of 6599 V. The synchronous impedance is (0.6 j6) ohms per phase. Find terminal voltage, voltage regulation and torque angle if load current is 180 A at p.f. 0.8 leading. Question 8 The short circuit, open circuit and DC test data for a 3-phase, 50 kVA, 240 V, 60 Hz, star connected synchronous alternator are : VOC line 240 V , I SC line 115.65 A , VDC 10.35 V , I DC 52.8 A Determine : (a) Armature resistance, (b) Synchronous reactance, and (c) Short circuit ratio Question 9 Calculate the maximum load of a 5000 kVA, single phase alternator having an equivalent reactance of 5 ohm when connected to 6600 V bus-bars, if its excitation is such that the electromotive force on open circuit would be 6000 V. Find the armature current and power factor at this load. Question 10 A single phase 11 kV alternator having reactance of 10 has I a 220 A at unity p.f. when running on bus bars. If the steam supply is unchanged and emf raised by 25%, find new value of current and p.f.
