Ví dụ:

Câu trực tiếp: “I saw the school-boy here in this room today.”

Câu gián tiếp: She said that she had seen the school-boy there in that room that day.

Câu trực tiếp: “I will read these books now.”

Câu gián tiếp: She said that she would read those books then.

Ngoài quy tắc chung trên dây, người học cần chớ rằng tình huống thật và thời gian khi hành
động được thuật lại đóng vai trò rất quan trọng trong khi chuyển từ câu trực tiếp sang câu
gián tiếp.

III. CÂU HỎI TRONG CÂU GIÁN TIẾP

Câu hỏi trong lời nói gián tiếp được chia làm 2 loại:

(1) Câu hỏi bắt đầu với các trợ động từ

(2) Câu hỏi bắt đầu bằng Who, Whom, What, Which, Where, When, Why, How

S + ASKED + me/ her/ him+ WH? + S + V lui thi + O + ADV

3.1. Câu hỏi bắt đầu với các trợ động từ: Ta thêm If/whether

S + ASKED + me/ her/ him+ WH? + S + V lui thi + O + ADV

S + ASKED + me/ her/ him+ IF / WHETHER + S + V lui thi + O + ADV

Ví dụ:

Trực tiếp: “Do YOU like music?” he asked.

Gián tiếp: He asked DAT if/whether HE liked music.

3.2. Câu hỏi bắt đầu bằng Who, Whom, What, Which, Where, When, Why, How: Các
từ để hỏi trên được giữ nguyên trong câu gián tiếp:

Trực tiếp: “What is your age?” he asked.

Gián tiếp: He asked me what my age was.

3.3. Các dạng đặc biệt của câu hỏi trong lời nói gián tiếp

a) Shall/ would dùng để diễn t ả đề nghi, lời mời:

Ví dụ:

Trực tiếp: “Shall I bring you some milk?” he asked.

Gián tiếp: He offered to bring me some milk.

Trực tiếp: “Shall we meet at the theatre?” he asked.

Gián tiếp: He suggested meeting at the theatre.

b) Will/would dùng để diễn tả sự yêu cầu:

Ví dụ:

Trực tiếp: Will you help me, please?

Gián tiếp: He ashed me to help him.

Trực tiếp: Will you lend me your car?

Gián tiếp: He asked me to lend him my car

c) Câu mệnh lệnh và câu yêu cầu trong lời nói gián tiếp.

Ví dụ:
Trực tiếp: Go away!

Gián tiếp: He told me/The boys to go away.

Trực tiếp: Listen to me, please.

Gián tiếp: He asked me to listen to him

d) Câu cảm thán trong lời nói gián tiếp.

Ví dụ:

Trực tiếp: What a beautiful girl!

Tuỳ theo xúc cảm và hình thức diễn đạt, chúng ta có thể dùng nhiều hình thức khác nhau
như sau:

Gián tiếp: She exclaimed that the girl was beautiful.

She exclaimed that the dress was a lovely once.

She exclaimed with admiration at the sight of the girl.

e) Các hình thức hỗn hợp trong lời nói gián tiếp.

Lời nói trực tiếp có thể bao gồm nhiều hình thức hỗn hợp: câu khẳng định, câu hỏi, câu
mệnh lệnh, câu cảm thán:

Ví dụ:

Trực tiếp: She said, “can you play the soccer?” and I said”no”

Gián tiếp: She asked me if could play the soccer and I said that I could not.

vấn,...) thì câu đầu vẫn làm bình thường sau đó thêm and và động từ tường thuật riêng của
câu sau.
Ex: “This is my book. Don’t take it away.”--> She said that was her book and told me not to
take it away.
“Tomorrow is my birthday. Do you remember that?”--> She said that the next day was her
birthday and asked me if I remembered that.
