while overcoming their personal, social, and economic constraints in schooling.

This learning resource hopes to engage the learners into guided and
independent learning activities at their own pace and time. Furthermore, this also aims
to help learners acquire the needed 21st century skills while taking into consideration
their needs and circumstances.

In addition to the material in the main text, you will also see this box in the body
of the module:

Notes to the Teacher

This contains helpful tips or strategies that will help

you in guiding the learners.

As a facilitator, you are expected to orient the learners on how to use this module. You
also need to keep track of the learners' progress while allowing them to manage their
own learning. Furthermore, you are expected to encourage and assist the learners as
they do the tasks included in the module.

For the learner:

for guided and independent learning at your own pace and time. You will be enabled
to process the contents of the learning resource while being an active learner.

ii
This module has the following parts:

Activity : This will bring understanding to what you already know

and experience to what you should learn further.

Analysis : In this phase, you will process and classify what is valid
and not for a more in-depth understanding.

Abstraction : This part leads you in reinforcing what you know and
should know more. Exercises are presented for
independent practice to solidify your understanding and
skills of the topic.

Application : This stage brings you to a more practical way that you are
going to use what you have learned and think new ways
on how it can be improved further.

INTRODUCTION

According to Thomas Merton (1984), a Trappist monk, there is no other way for
us to find who we are than finding in ourselves the divine image. We have to struggle
to regain spontaneous and vital awareness of our own spirituality. Merton talks about
a continual movement away from inner and outer idols and toward union with the
desert God of Christian faith.

In philosophy, the adjectives transcendental and transcendence convey the

basic ground concept from the world’s literal meaning (from Latin), of climbing or going
beyond, with varying connotations in its different historical and cultural stages.

Appreciating art as transcendence existence. Knowledge and law will also

require transcendence. Scientific knowledge and laws are transcending simple,
phenomenal things to abstract. The fact that we have souls that are capable of coming
to life and experiencing profound and hidden values, which the flesh and its senses
can never discover alone. This spirituality in us is identified with the divine image in
our soul.

1
REVIEW OF THE PREVIOUS MODULE

In the previous lesson, we have learned that Transcendence can be attributed

to the divine not only in its being, but also in its knowledge. Thus, God may transcend
both the universe and knowledge (is beyond the grasp of the human mind).

Although transcendence is defined as the opposite of immanence, the two are

not necessarily mutually exclusive. Some theologians and metaphysicians of various
religious traditions affirm that a god is both within and beyond the universe
(panentheism); in it, but not of it; simultaneously pervading it and surpassing.

PRESENTATION OF THE NEW MODULE

Let us now evaluate our human limitations and how we can also transcend
them. Many of us would experience any of the following; for emerging from deep within
and felt a sense of being in tune with the mystery of our own being, and with the
mystery of life that transcends us.

ACTIVITY

ACTIVITY 2: REFLECTIONAIRE. Answer the following questions in your notebook.

1. Examine your tree of life. Are there other potentials that haven’t borne fruit
ye? How can you develop these potentials to achieve the goals you have
written on the branches of your tree?
2. From your tree do you see possibilities of a meaningful life for you? Why or
why not?
2. Do your personal goals have anything to do with your fellow being? What
does this show about you?
3. What feeling do you get when you have identified goals, and know your
potentials for achieving these goals? What feelings do you get when you are
able to achieve a goal?

ANALYSIS

Share an experience when you have faced failures. Do this by answering the guide
questions below in your notebook.
1. How do you view suffering (as a blessing or as a curse)?
2. How do you acknowledge the help of others?
3. How can forgiveness free us from anger?

2
ABSTRACTION

RECOGNIZE THE HUMAN BODY IMPOSES LIMITS AND POSSIBILITIES FOR

EVALUATE OWN LIMITATIONS AND THE POSSIBILITIES FOR THEIR
TRANSCENDENCE

A. FORGIVENESS
When we forgive, we are freed from our anger and bitterness because
of the actions and/or words of another.

B. THE BEAUTY OF NATURE

There is perfection in every single flower; this is what the three
philosophies believed. For a hug, for every sunrise and sunset, to eat together
as a family, are our miracles.

C. VULNERABILITY
To be invulnerable is somehow inhuman. To be vulnerable is to be
human. The experience that we are contingent, that we are dependent for our
existence on another is frightening.

D. FAILURE
Our failures force us to confront our weaknesses and limitations. When
a relationship fails, when a student fails a subject, when our immediate desires
are not met, we are confronted with the possibility of our plans and yet, we are
forced to surrender to a mystery or look upon a bigger world.

E. LONELINESS
Our loneliness can be rooted from our sense of vulnerability and fear of
death.

F. LOVE
To love is to experience richness, positivity and transcendence. Life is
full of risks, fears and commitment, pain and sacrificing and giving up thing/s
we want for the sake of the one we love.

3
APPLICATION

Answer the following questions in your notebook.

1. What are your limitations as a person? What are the things that you consider
as difficult or hard for you to accomplish or believe in?
2. What are your strengths? What are the possible things or status that you can
reach or achieve in the future?
3. What are the factors affecting your limitations? How about possibilities?
4. Do you see yourself improving in 5 – 10 years’ time? How can you say that
you are improving?
5. How can you transcend from your current limitations?

4
ANSWER KEY

ACTIVITY

1. Examine your tree of life. Are there other potentials that haven’t borne fruit yet?
How can you develop these potentials to achieve the goals you have written
on the branches of your tree?
2. So far, those I have mentioned are my greatest potentials and those potentials
will serve as a guide for me to attain my goals and aspirations in life. I can
achieve those goals with the help of these traits together with the guidance
and support of my family and with God’s grace.
3. From your tree do you see possibilities of a meaningful life for you? Why or
why not?
4. Yes, of course, I can definitely say that my life is full of meaning. There are so
many reasons for this life to live. I have so many friends, I have a very
supportive and loving family and most especially God is there for me.
5. Do your personal goals have anything to do with your fellow being? What does
this show about you?
6. Absolutely yes, you can take my family as an example. I wanted to become
nurse because I wanted to take care of my grandmother who is a senior citizen
and at the same time it is my dream job because when I was a kid, I used to
play pretend with my friends as nurse in a hospital.
7. What feeling do you get when you have identified goals, and know your
potentials for achieving these goals? What feelings do you get when you are
able to achieve a goal?
8. I feel very positive in every aspect of my life. I can wake up every morning with
a smile and full of inspiration. I know can I make it with my dedication and
determination and also with the help of my family and with the guidance of our
Almighty Father.
