equation of the circle in form of 𝒙𝟐 + 𝒚𝟐 + 𝒂𝒙 + 𝒃𝒚 + 𝒄 = 𝟎 (3 marks)

WALTER JAPAR 2
7) Two points have coordinates R (4, 8, -4) and S (4, -4, 8). Another point T divides line RS
internally in the ratio of 1:3. The position vectors of points R, S and T are r, s and t
respectively.

SECTION 2: (40 MARKS)

Instruction: Answer any FOUR (4) QUESTIONS IN THE SPACES PROVIDED

Question One

i. A farmer uses two harvesters to harvest wheat on his farm. One of the harvesters is a
Ferguson and the other is a Honda. It normally takes both harvesters to work together
3 hours and 20 minutes to complete the job. On one occasion both the harvesters
started working together, but after 40 minutes Ferguson broke down and Honda had
to complete the job alone. Given that it took Honda a further 4- hours to complete the
job, determine how long it would take each harvester working alone to complete the
job. (7 marks)

ii. Peter bought some articles at Kshs.3060 per dozen and sold them all making a profit
of 20% on the cost price. When selling these articles, he allowed his customers a
discount of 10% on the marked price of each article. Find the marked price of each
article. (3 marks)

WALTER JAPAR 5
Question Two

i. The radius of a spherical ball is measured as 7 cm, correct to the nearest centimeters.
Determine, to 2 decimal places, the percentage error in calculating the surface area of
the ball. (4 marks)

ii. Given that 8 ≤ 𝒚 ≤ 12 and 1 ≤ 𝒙 ≤ 6, find the absolute error in each of the
following:

a. 𝒙 × 𝒚 (2 marks)

b. 𝒚 ÷ 𝒙 (2 marks)

𝒙+𝒚
c. (2 marks)
𝒚−𝒙

WALTER JAPAR 6
Question Three

i. Find in form of 𝒙2 + 𝒚2 + 𝒂𝒙 + 𝒃𝒚 + 𝒄 = 0 the equation of a circle passing through

the points (−1,1) and (2,3) and has its centre on line 𝒙 − 11 = 3𝒚 (6 marks)

ii. Solve the equation 𝐥𝐨𝐠 5 (𝒙 − 3) = 𝐥𝐨𝐠 25 (2𝒙 + 4) (4 marks)

WALTER JAPAR 7
Question Four

i. The sum of the first four terms of a geometric progression having 𝒏 terms is 64 times
the sum of the last four terms of the same progression. If the value of the fourth term
is 192, determine the exact value of the last term. (6 marks)

ii. Determine the shortest distance from the point (2,1) to the line 𝒙 = 4 − 2𝒚.
(4 marks)

WALTER JAPAR 8
Question Five
