11. The driver of a train, travelling at 40 km/s on a straight horizontal track, is informed of
a debris on the track 0.74 km and immediately applied the breaks. This made the train
to decelerates uniformly for 20 seconds to a speed of 12 m/s. The train maintains this
speed for another 6 seconds. Then the driver reapplies the brakes to slow down the
train to a constant rate and bring to complete stop 10 m before the debris.
(a). Sketch a velocity time graph to show the motion of the train. (4 marks)

(b). Calculate the total time from the moment the brakes were first applied to the moment
the train came to rest. (6 marks)

12. A class had K300 to spend on soft drink for an end of year partly. The expected not
less than 40 people to attend the party and each to have at least one bottle of drink. The
drinks were to be bought from the school tuck-shop which had only two types of soft
drink selling at K75 and K50 per bottle. The class decide to buy both types of drinks
but more of the first types than the second type.
(a) Taking x to represent the number of bottle of the first type of drink and y to represent the
number of bottles of the second type of drink, write down the inequalities that represent this
information. (5 marks)
