23-07-2024 ASSIGNMENT 1
A SURVEY OF THE CHRISTIAN DOCTRINES -1
2
. Could you write an essay on what a doctrine is and why Christians need to study doctrines?
Ans. As we all know by now, a doctrine simply means, a set of beliefs that any individual or a group
of people trust and practise. Therefore, a Christian doctr-une is the body of teaching found in the
Bible - about uho sod is, who ie are aud so on.
Doctrines play a vital part in every Christian's life. In my opinion, Christians need to study them
because of three main reasons:

a) Doctrine summarizes God's word

Doctrine summarizes the truths of the Bible, synthesizing and condensing its teaching.
Since it is based on the Scriptures, doctrine bears the weighty responsibility of rightly reflecting the
words God breathed out through the biblical writers. I think it’s safe to say, ‘All doctrines are
Scriptures, but all Scriptures are not doctrines.’

b) Doctrine Guarantees the Health of God’s Church

Those who believe in Christ live as members of his body, the church. As part of that church we have
the benefit of doctrine handed down through generations of faithful believers. Such doctrine has
been passed on for centuries within the church and within local church congregations, from one
generation to the next. Therefore, we must be actively involved in churches that care about healthy
doctrine, led by people who have carefully studied the word and can shepherd us and answer our
questions.

c) Doctrine Bears Fruit in the Lives of God’s People

By now we know that the Sound doctrine is teaching that rightly explains what God has revealed to
us in His word. Sound doctrine is essential to the church and the Christian life because it is a central
means by which we grow to maturity in Christ. Sound Christian doctrine not only summarizes the
very word of God and guarantees the health of the church; it also bears fruit in the lives of God’s
people. Doctrine is supremely practical. It determines how you live your life.
1
. Search for Apocrypha and write down five reasons why it is not God’s word as the Bible is
.
God’s Word. (Mention the sources as well).
Ans. In order for a book to be canonized centuries ago, certain criteria were to be followed:
• It had to have been composed during the period between Moses and Ezra
• It had to have a certain objective sacred quality which differentiated it from all other
2
non-sacred books.
• It had to be included in the number of books listed by Josephus (Josephus was a
Jewish Historian)

The Catholic Church has an additional 7 books in the Old Testament canon: Tobit, Judith, 1
Maccabees, 2 Maccabees, Wisdom of Solomon, Sirach and Baruch. These are what Protestant
Church together calls “apocrypha”. The reasons why it is not considered ‘Gods word’ are:

A) The Catholic Church accepted these books late. They, at the Council of Trent (1546), decided to
keep the “deutero-
canonical” books.
B) These books were found to be written in the inter testamental period, where we strongly believe
that there was no direct communication with God or there wasn’t any divine prophetic guidance
during this era.
C) The Apocrypha contains doctrines and practices that contradict those found in the canonical
Bible. For example, it promotes the concept of salvation through almsgiving and good works,
whereas the Bible teaches salvation by grace through faith. Additionally, the Apocrypha supports
the doctrine of purgatory, which is not found in the canonical scriptures.
D) The Jewish community, to whom “the oracles of God” were entrusted did not accept the
Apocrypha as part of their scripture. Historical figures like Philo and Josephus, as well as the Jewish
councils, did not recognize the Apocrypha as canonical. The Hebrew Bible, which Jesus affirmed,
does not include these books
E) At the time of the Reformation, Protestants decided that because the additional books weren't in
the Hebrew Bible, they shouldn’t be in the Christian Bible either (though they were included in early
editions of the King James
Bible).

.
all three exhibit. Use the Bible to give supportive references.
