Answer all the questions in this section in the spaces provided.

1. Solve for x in the equation

2. Simplify and rationalize the expression giving your answer the expression giving your answer
is the form of a + b c , where a, b and c are constants. (3 marks)

3. Solve for x in the range 00  x  1800 given that -8 sin2x – 2 cos x = -5 (3 marks)

4. Calculate the shortest distance between (40oS, 60oE) and (40oS, 1200W) in nautical miles
along the great circle. (3 marks)

5. A farmer wishes to grow two crops; potatoes and beans. He has 70 hectares available for this
purpose. He has 240 man days of labour available to work out the land and he can spend upto
Sh 180 000. The requirements for the crops are as follows:-
Potatoes beans
Minimum number of hectares to be 10 10

Man – day per hactare 2 4
Cost per hectare in sh 3000 2000
Profit per hectare 15000 10000

If x and y represent the number of hectares to be used for potatoes and beans respectively,
write down in their simplest form the inequalities which x and y must satisfy. (4 mks)

7. The dimensions of a rectangle are 10cm and 15cm to the nearest cm. Find the percentage
error in the area of the rectangle. (3 marks)

Determine the instantaneous rate of change at A. (3 marks)

9. Two grades of tea costing ksh.80 and ksh.120 per kilogram respectively are mixed in the ratio
2:3 by weight, the mixture is then sold at ksh.204 per kilogram. Find the percentage profit on
the cost of the mixture. (4 marks)

10. Find the value of independent term in the expansion of the expression; (3 marks)

11. Construct a tangent through the point X on the circumference of the given circle

12. A car cost ksh.1 200 000 in December 2022. Its value has been depreciating by 5%
every 4 months. Find its value in January 2026, correct to the nearest shilling. (3 marks)

13. Find the radius and the coordinates of the center of the circle whose equation is
and hence draw the circle in the grid below. (4 marks)

14. A particle moves in a straight line from a fixed point. Its velocity V m/s after t seconds is given
by V  9t 2  6t  2 calculate the distance traveled by the particle during the 2nd second.

15. Letters and parcels can take up to 2 days to be delivered by a courier company. The table
below shows the percentage of items delivered at certain times after sending.

Mr. Kamau who is a civil servant earns a Monthly salary of Kshs.20000 and is provided
with a house at a nominal rent of Kshs.700 per month
a) Taxable pay is the employee’s salary plus 15% less nominal rent. Calculate
Mr.Kamau’s taxable pay (2 marks)

b) Calculate the total tax Mr. Kamau pays. (3 marks)

c) Mr. Kamau is entitled to a personal relief of Kshs.600 per month. Calculate his net
tax. (2 marks)

d) Mr. Kamau has the following deductions made on his pay;


Loan repayment of Kshs.2100 per month
NSSF Kshs.200 per month
WCPS calculated at 2 % of monthly salary
Calculate Mr. Kipchokes net pay. (3 marks)

21. The 1st, the 7th and 25th terms of an arithmetic progression are the first three consecutive
terms of a geometrical progression. The 20th terms of the arithmetic progression is 22. Find:
(a) (i) the first term and common difference of the arithmetic progression.
(3 marks)

(ii) the sum of the first 40 terms of the arithmetic progression. (2 marks)

(b) (i) the 10th term of geometric progression. (2 marks)

(ii) the sum of the first 10 terms of the geometric progression. (3 marks)

(c) The mean of a set of 10 values is 17 and its variance is 33. If one of the values is 21, find the
variance of the other values (4 marks)

23. Three quantities , R , S and T are such that R varies directly as S and inversely as the square
root of T
(a) R = 480 when S = 150 and T = 25, write an equation connecting R, S and T . (4 marks)

(b) Find:
(i) The value of R when S = 360 and T = 2.25 . (2 marks)

(ii) The percentage change in R if S is increased by 5% and T decreased by 15.36%. (4 marks)

24. Use a ruler and a pair of compasses only for all constructions in this question.

a) i) Construct a triangle ABC in which AB=8cm, and BC=7.5cm and ABC=112½°(3 marks)
ii) Measure the length of AC (1 mark)

b) By shading the unwanted regions show the locus of P within the triangle ABC such that
i) AP ≤ BP
ii) AP >3cm
Mark the required region as P (3 marks)

c) Construct a normal from C to meet AB produced at D (2 mark)

d) Locate the locus of R in the same diagram such that the area of triangle ARB is ¾ the
area of the triangle ABC. (1 mark)
