BASKETBALL

PATH 4 (TEAMSPORTS)
RECREATIONAL GAMES AND SPORTS

MR. VICTORINO G. ESPINOSA JR, LPT

What is TEAMSPORTS?
The meaning of a "team sport" has been disputed in recent years.
Some types of sports have different objectives or rules than
"traditional" team sports. These types of team sports do not involve
teammates facilitating the movement of a ball or similar object in
accordance with a set of rules, in order to score points. Overall, the
division into team sports and individual sports is not always
unproblematic, since there are different combinations in the individual
sports.
Example of TEAMSPORTS:

● BASKETBALL
● SOCCER
● BASEBALL/SOFTBALL
● VOLLEYBALL ETC.
WHAT IS BASKETBALL?

- Basketball, game played between two teams of five players each on

a rectangular court, usually indoors. Each team tries to score by
tossing the ball through the opponent’s goal, an elevated horizontal
hoop and net called a basket.
HISTORY OF BASKETBALL
Dr. James Naismith

•Father of the Basketball

•Canadian American
•Physical Educator in YMCA
•31 years old
•He wrote 13 original rules

In spite of student suggestions that he call the game “Naismith Ball,”

the modest inventor gave the sport a two-word moniker—“basket
ball.” In an article that ran in the January 15, 1892, edition of The
Triangle, which was distributed to YMCAs around the country,
Naismith detailed his 13 rules for a “new game of ball”
13 original rules of basketball
1.The ball may be thrown in any direction with one or both hands.
2. The ball may be batted in any direction with one or both hands (never with the fist).
3. A player cannot run with the ball. The player must throw it from the spot on which he catches it, allowance to be made for a man who catches
the ball when running at a good speed if he tries to stop.
4. The ball must be held in or between the hands; the arms or body must not be used for holding it.
5. No shouldering, holding, pushing, tripping, or striking in any way the person of an opponent shall be allowed; the first i nfringement of this rule
by any player shall count as a foul, the second shall disqualify him until the next goal is made, or, if there was evident in tent to injure the person,
for the whole of the game, no substitute allowed.
6. A foul is striking at the ball with the fist, violation of Rules 3,4, and such as described in Rule 5.
7. If either side makes three consecutive fouls, it shall count a goal for the opponents (consecutive means without the oppon ents in the mean time
making a foul).
8. A goal shall be made when the ball is thrown or batted from the grounds into the basket and stays there, providing those d efending the goal do
not touch or disturb the goal. If the ball rests on the edges, and the opponent moves the basket, it shall count as a goal.
9. When the ball goes out of bounds, it shall be thrown into the field of play by the person first touching it. In case of a dispute, the umpire shall
throw it straight into the field. The thrower-in is allowed five seconds; if he holds it longer, it shall go to the opponent. If any side persists in
delaying the game, the umpire shall call a foul on that side.
10. The umpire shall be judge of the men and shall note the fouls and notify the referee when three consecutive fouls have be en made. He shall
have power to disqualify men according to Rule 5.
11. The referee shall be judge of the ball and shall decide when the ball is in play, in bounds, to which side it belongs, an d shall keep the time. He
shall decide when a goal has been made, and keep account of the goals with any other duties that are usually performed by a r eferee.
12. The time shall be two 15-minute halves, with five minutes’ rest between.
13. The side making the most goals in that time shall be declared the winner. In case of a draw, the game may, by agreement o f the captains, be
continued until another goal is made.

Facilities and equipment
1. Basketball court the basketball court is the playing surface, consisting of a rectangular
floor, with baskets at each end. In professional or organized basketball, especially when
played indoors, it is usually made out of a wood, often maple, and highly polished and
completed with a 10 foot rim.
Facilities and equipment
2. Basketball courts come in different sizes. In the National Basketball Association (NBA), the
court is 94 by 50 feet (28.7 by 15.2 m). Under International Basketball Federation (FIBA) rules,
the court is slightly smaller, measuring 28 by 15 meters (91.9 by 49.2 ft).
Facilities and equipment
3. A backboard is a piece of basketball equipment. It is a raised vertical board with an
attached basket consisting of a net suspended from a hoop. It is made of a flat, rigid piece of,
often Plexiglas or tempered glass which also has the properties of safety glass when
accidentally shattered
Facilities and equipment
4. A basketball is a spherical ball used in basketball games. Basketballs usually range in
size from very small promotional items that are only a few inches (some centimeters) in
diameter to extra large balls nearly 2 feet (60 cm) in diameter used in training exercises.
Facilities and equipment
5. The net serves many functions in the game of basketball. One of the functions of a
basketball net is to make it easier for the player to retrieve the ball. When the ball passes
through the rim on an angle, the net will slow the ball down and make it easier for the player
to collect underneath.
Facilities and equipment
6. The rim or ring in basketball is a metal circle which the ball must go through in order for a
point to be scored. The net is attached to the bottom of the rim and hangs below and
behind the rim is the backboard. This creates what we know as the basketball hoop.
Facilities and equipment
7. A basketball uniform is a type of uniform worn by basketball players. Basketball uniforms
consist of a jersey that features the number and typically the last name of the player on the
back, as well as shorts and athletic shoes. Within teams, players wear uniforms representing
the team colors; the home team usually wears a lighter-colored uniform, while the visiting
team wears a darker-colored uniform
Two types of basketball
1. AMATEUR – School intrams, inter barangay, regional meets, SCUAA, CLARAA.

2. Professional – NBA, WNBA, PBA

DEFENSIVE AND OFFENSIVE REBOUNDING
A rebound can be grabbed by either an offensive player or a defensive player.
Rebounds are divided into two main categories: "offensive rebounds", in which the ball
is recovered by the offensive side and does not change possession, and
"defensive rebounds", in which the defending team gains possession.
The two types of rebounding

1. OFFENSIVE
2. DEFENSIVE
BLOCK SHOTS
In basketball, a block or blocked shot occurs when a defensive
player legally deflects a field goal attempt from an offensive player
to prevent a score. The defender is not allowed to make contact with
the offensive player's hand (unless the defender is also in contact
with the ball) or a foul is called..
STEALING THE BALL
In basketball, a steal occurs when a defensive player legally causes
a turnover by their positive, aggressive action(s). This can be done by
deflecting and controlling, or by catching the opponent's pass
or dribble of an offensive player. The defender must not touch the
offensive player's hands or otherwise a foul is called.
VIOLATION
In basketball, a common violation is the most minor class of illegal action. Most
violations are committed by the team with possession of the ball, when a player
mishandles the ball or makes an illegal move. The typical penalty for a violation
is loss of the ball to the other team. This is one type of turnover.

TYPES OF FOUL
FOUL-the single most common violation in basketball is the foul. This occurs when a
player uses physical force/content to gain an unfair advantage. Fouls are typically
committed by defensive.

• Personal Fouls: A foul that is physical in nature, like grabbing and pushing.
• Flagrant Fouls: A foul that involves extraordinary violent contact with an opposing
player or a dangerous, non-basketball play.
• Technical Fouls: A foul that is unsportsmanlike like screaming at the referee or at
an opponent.

TECHNICAL Foul
Technical fouls occur when a player or coach shows unsportsmanlike behavior. Here are the instances when a
technical foul may be called:

• Delay of game
• Low or excessive number of players
• Unsportsmanlike behavior
• Calling a timeout after exhaustion of all timeouts
• Flopping
Flagrant Foul
In its simplest term, a flagrant foul is an unnecessary contact that may harm a player. These fouls can be
unintentional or deliberate, and a further review by the referees may be necessary.

There are two flagrant fouls: Flagrant 1 and 2.

1.Flagrant 1 is an unnecessary contact that a player has committed.

2. Flagrant 2 is committed when there’s excessive contact that’s unreasonable. A player who receives a flagrant 2
call in the NBA will be immediately ejected out of the game.
