1 Overview
The architecture of base stations has been changing over the years. Compared with remote
frequency units (RFUs), the remote radio units (RRUs) proposed by Huawei supports
installation close to the antenna, reducing the feeder loss by 3 dB and the transmit power
while enlarging the network coverage. It has been a tendency in the telecommunication
industry that the functions of radio frequency (RF) modules are incorporated into the antenna.
More and more operators choose the RRU solution for the entire network.
The active antenna system (AAS) module is a new type of RF module following the RFU and
RRU. Featured by incorporating functions of RRUs and conventional antennas, AAS modules
require less site resources.
With the rapid development of mobile broadband (MBB), multimode and multi-band base
stations have been leading the trend. However, the increasingly complex base stations and a
growing number of modules considerably raise the operating expense (OPEX). Simplification
of base stations is becoming a trend in building multimode and multiband networks. To follow
this trend, Huawei first introduces the AAS technology and launches a series of AAU
products.
The AAU3911 is a main product for Huawei to implement the AAS technology. It adopts the
active antenna technology to further incorporate the functions of RF modules into the antenna.
The AAU3911 supports a maximum of two active frequency bands.
By incorporating the functions of RF modules into the antenna, the AAU3911 can reduce the
jumper loss by about 0.8 dB and save energy by 10%.
Compared with the RRU, the AAU3911 simplifies site installation, reducing the installation
time.
The AAU3911 supports uplink 4-way receive diversity in high frequency bands, eliminating
the bottleneck of uplink capacity.
As a type of active antenna product, the AAU3911 can connect to RRUs or RFUs. Through
the replacement of antennas on the live network with AAU3910s, new GSM, UMTS, or LTE
sites can be deployed without adding antennas.
1.1 Appearance
1.2 Functional Modules
An AAU consists of the antenna unit (AU) and radio unit (RU). The AU is the main bearing
part in an AAU. It performs the antenna function and RET function and provides ports and
installation slots. The RU converts and transfers signals between the baseband unit (BBU) and
the antenna system. The BBU and RU are connected through CPRI ports using the fiber optic
cable or electrical cable to transmit CPRI signals.
1.1 Appearance
Figure 1-1 shows AAU3911 appearance.
1.2.1 AU
The AAU3911 can be configured with three types of AUs: AU11Ia, AU11Ib, and AU11Ic.
AU11Ia
Figure 1-2 shows AU11Ia physical ports, and Table 1-1 describes these ports.
AU11Ib
Figure 1-3 shows AU11Ib physical ports, and Table 1-2 describes these ports.
AU11Ic
Figure 1-4 shows AU11Ic physical ports, and Table 1-3 describes these ports.
1.2.2 RU
The AAU3911 can be configured with the following types of RUs: RU3260, RU3261,
RU3832, RU3952m, and RU3971.
Figure 1-5, Figure 1-6, Figure 1-7, Figure 1-8, , and Figure 1-9 show RU physical ports, and

2 Technical Specifications
In the AAU Configuration column containing "xA+yP", "A" indicates the active modules and "P"
indicates the passive modules (not installed in the AAU slots). "x" and "y" indicate the frequency
bands of active and passive modules, respectively. For example, 2100 MHz A+700 MHz to 900
MHz P means that the frequency band of the active module is 2100 MHz and that of the passive
module ranges from 700 MHz to 900 MHz.
In the RU Specifications column, "UP" indicates that the RU is installed in the upper slot of the
AAU and "DOWN" indicates that the RU is installed in the lower slot of the AAU.
In the AU Specifications column, "UP" indicates the frequency band supported by the antenna port
at the rear of the antenna and "DOWN" indicates the frequency band supported by the antenna port
at the bottom of the antenna.
The Combiner Configuration column indicates whether a combiner is configured and the
frequency band specifications of the combiner. For details on the combiner, see AAU3911 Hardware
Description.
When a combiner is configured and connected to a passive module, the combiner loss must be
considered. Therefore, the antenna gain of the passive module equals the antenna gain minus 0.5 dB.
For example, when the configuration 2100 MHz A (2T4R 2x60 W)+1800 MHz P (4 Ports)+700
MHz to 900 MHz P (2 Ports) is used, the antenna gain of the RF module is calculated as follows
when the combiner is connected to an RF module working in the 1800 MHz frequency band: 17 dBi
– 0.5 dB = 16.5 dBi.
(1): This configuration is supported from SRAN12.1 onwards.

As recommended in 3GPP TS 51.021, the GSM receiver sensitivity is the receiver sensitivity
measured at the antenna connector minus the antenna gain, assuming that the channel rate is 13
kbit/s and the bit error rate (BER) is lower than or equal to 2%.
As recommended in 3GPP TS 25.104, the UMTS receiver sensitivity is the receiver sensitivity
measured at the antenna connector minus the antenna gain, assuming that the channel rate is 12.2
kbit/s and the BER is lower than or equal to 0.001.
As recommended in 3GPP TS 36.104, the LTE receiver sensitivity is the receiver sensitivity
measured at the antenna connector minus the antenna gain according to the FRC A1-3 in Annex A.1
(QPSK, R = 1/3, 25 RBs) standard assuming that the 5 MHz bandwidth is used.
The maximum power consumption is measured when the ambient temperature is 25°C and the AAU
is 100% loaded. The actual maximum power consumption has a 10% deviation from this value.
The Maximum Power Consumption (W) column provides the power consumption of the
AAU3911, excluding the power consumption of external RF modules.
