Chairman's Report 2024
Chairman's Report 2024
2023 is a preparatory year for our fundraising drives in 2024-2025. Our team has continued to
reunite alumni and friends of Wah Yan through sports and other activities, keeping each other in
company and gathering their support to our Bloom Campaign and other initiatives.
For instance, the Guinness World Record Creation, the 2nd Bloom Campaign event due to be
held on 2nd November 2024, will form part of the Centenary Celebration Programmes of Wah Yan
College, Kowloon as a token of our continued support. Hence, I would like to report to you our
progress and achievements as follows:
Although no major fundraising event was held in 2023, we were able to gather a gross income
of $2.38 million from donations and investment return. Subsequently, the Foundation appropriated
$1.74 million to support whole person development programmes for pupils at the two Wah Yans.
2. Ongoing initiatives
Our School STEAM teams have continued to be achieving exceptional results in local and global
competitions, like Championship in CUHK COSMO Competition in August 2023 and the Mathematics
Project Competition for Secondary Schools 2023/24, and what not. (Appendix 1)
Moreover, Prof Albert Wong, a WYK Class 1977 alumnus and Associate Head for UG Studies
and Outreach and Senior Lecturer of the Department of Electronic and Computer Engineering (ECE)
of Hong Kong University of Technology (UST), was invited to deliver a speech to our School STEM
team on 27 January 2024. Prof Wong shared his journeys in MIT, his career development, and
particularly some inspiring insights into the meaning of STEAM education. His words provided our
boys with multifarious paths for setting their goals next. (Appendix 2)
The 2023 Alma Mater sailing race was successfully completed on Sun, 17 December 2023. Our
Wah Yan Sailors took part with 5 boats and achieved the following results:
The 3 Wah Yan Schools and about 50 WY sailors and friends gathered before the Race started
(with 3 current students (youngest aged 10) and the team spirit and brotherhood was exceptional.
(Appendix 3)
A group of young Wahyanites who have taken part in our first Marathon in 2008 vowed to repay
Wah Yan by going all out to complete the 2024 Full Marathon Race in the SCB Hong Kong Marathon
under 3 hours, a record only around 200+ runners out of the 60,000+ participants could achieve each
year. These runners formed a group named “Pacemaker” and started offering 11 professional training
courses & 3 seminars for alumni, pupils and parents and friends of Wah Yan from August 2023
onwards. Over 100 alumni joined and enjoyed the sessions in great fun and harmony.
Eventually 108 runners took part in the 2024 Race and helped us raise over HKD500,000 to
support sports development in both Wah Yans. We will continue to partner with Pacemaker to gather
more legs and funding for the Schools in 2025 and beyond. (Appendix 4)
The Foundation will focus on gathering support from alumni and friends for more NET (Native
English-speaking teachers) and STEAM/STEM programme in the two Schools in the next 5 years.
The aim is to further enhance the linguistic and science literacy of young Wahyanites so that they
could become more competitive and creative in resolving problems in their daily life.
Moving heaven and earth, the funding will be deployed to employ more NETs, upgrade science
laboratories, employ more teaching staff and support more workshops, internships and participations
in local and global competitions. “STEAM/STEM for all”, as the Project slogan goes, we will continue
to support linguistic and STEAM/STEM development programmes in both Wah Yans.
Our YouTube live talk on Running and Sports Health launched on 29 June 2023 had attracted
over 300 audiences. Proven effective in amassing alumni and friends, we will continue to produce
more live talks from 2024 onwards. Our web shop will be enhanced with more collectibles in late
2024 so please stay tuned.

Since 2020, we have been planning to create a world record for Wah Yan, by using 10,000 scarves to
build a figure "100" and sending 10,000+ blessing bags to the elderlies. This is not only a record for
every Wah Yan community member, but also indicative of what our revered Jesuits Fathers have
taught us: to serve those in need and be "Men for and with Others".
Now life is back to normal in 2024, we would like to launch the Creation and dedicate it as part of
the Centenary Celebrations of Wah Yan College, Kowloon, as well as the 2nd event of our Bloom
Campaign, following the Music Festival held in 2022.
By donating HKD1,000, you can help us produce a scarf and a Blessing Bag and raise funds for
supporting more NET and STEAM/STEM education at the two Wah Yans. The Blessing Bags will be
sent to 10,000+ elderlies at Caritas Centres right after the world record creation.

Since June 2024, the Pacemakers have set out to train our runners by organizing Summer
Runs. A total of 8 Runs will be organized and formal training will start in September/October. The
target is to gather more funding (e.g. HKD500,000) or more to further support sports development in
the two Wah Yan, through breaking more records in different Runs i.e. Sub 3 in Full Marathon, Sub
1:30 in Half Marathon and Sub 40 in 10km. It will be a journey to excel for a better self. I am therefore
calling upon all Wah Yan runners to follow the Pacemakers in the upcoming training programmes.
Going into the next Centenary of Wah Yan, we will focus on amassing a hefty sum to enable the
Schools to cope with the ever-changing educational needs, government policies and university
admission requirements, especially in getting more NET & STEAM/STEM teaching programmes.
We are working closely with the Schools on new fundraising drives and will announce more “Bloom
Campaign” events soon.
May we again extend our greatest gratitude to your generosity to Wah Yan and looking forward
to having your unfailing support in the future.
