Chairman's Report 2023
Chairman's Report 2023
First and foremost, may I wish all Members of the Wah Yan community best health and a positive
state of mind after the pandemic. We are on course to normalcy and are positive that the Wah Yan
Community will be vividly reunited in joy and harmony.
In 2022, our team has continued to reunite alumni and friends of Wah Yan through events and
online activities, keeping each other in company and gathering their support to our Bloom Campaign
and other initiatives. An account of our achievements is summarized for perusal below.
Albeit the prevailing pandemic in 2022, we were able to organize some fundraising activities
and netted a gross income of $17.12 million from donations and investment return. Subsequently, the
Foundation appropriated $4.94 million to support teaching and whole person development
programmes for pupils at the two Wah Yans.
DSE Results
This year over 80% of our boys received a JUPAS offer, again a high score surpassing many
elite schools. Each Wah Yan yielded several scholars with 5** in 5 subjects + 5* in 1/2 subjects, who
were joined by many schoolmates with 5** in 4-5 subjects. Again your unfailing support has
encouraged the Schools to drive young Wahyanites to achieve academic excellence.
What’s even more encouraging, our School STEAM teams have been achieving exceptional
results in local and global competitions, like Champion in the IVE Hong Kong Secondary School IT
Knowledge Challenge in June 2022, Overall Champion in the Microsoft Interschool Minecraft
eSports in August 2022, and World # 1 in the Canadian Computing Competition (CCC) in March
2023, just to name a few. (Appendix 1)
The AI Lab renovation in Wah Yan College, Kowloon was completed in December 2022 and an
official opening acknowledging our donors’ unfailing support was held on 16 July 2023. We were
impressed by our STEAM Team’s spirit of brotherhood to inspire young Wahyanites to start learning
STEAM programmes from F1 onwards, fulfilling the School’s promise to support “STEAM for All”
and “STEAM for More” on campus. (Appendix 2)

As the finale of our first major Bloom Campaign initiatives, we re-ran 2 programmes on 22
October and 23 October 2022 at the Grand Theatre, Hong Kon Cultural Centre, netting a 90%
attendance and another $200,000 net income from donations and ticket receipts. The evenings were
filled with love, brotherhood and a spirit of “Magis” – that we all want to do our best for Wah Yan.
The Festival has made a case of the only Schools in Hong Kong that managed to run a 5-night public
performance. We would not have achieved this milestone without the arduous support of the two Wah
Yans, alumni, friend schools and friends of Wah Yans. (Appendix 3)
Alumni from both Wah Yans introduced this sport to the Schools with a view of encouraging
young Wahyanites to improve their physique and mental resilience facing hardship and roughness.
Their efforts gathered donations and support from many alumni of different times. Eventually, their
funding enabled some young pupils to take part in training and be able to sail on their own. These
alumni, named themselves as “Wah Yan Sailors”, furthered their actions by chartering 7 boats to take
part in the YMC alma Mater Race, organized by the Royal Hong Kong Yacht Club on 18 December
2022. Our Supervisor Fr Tsui, the 2 Principals and the “Sailors” convenor gave encouraging speeches
to over 80 alumni, young Wahyanites and parents at the “Pre-sail” session. Despite wind chill and a
low temperature, the event brewed brotherhood, mutual support and a fighting spirit among the little
WY community onsite. (Appendix 4)
Some 30 alumni and friends took part in the Marathon 2023 held on 12 February 2023, our 14th
participation in a row. Thanks to their efforts and support, we managed to raise over $200,000 to
support sports development in the two Wah Yans. We will continue to take part in the years ahead.
Wah Yans have been continuing in nurturing distinctive, competent and caring leaders with
compassion, creativity and commitment to serve needy people on limited means. Our teachers and
staff members deserve the credit and our further support. (Appendix 5)
In view of the exceptional achievements by our school STEAM teams, the Foundation will
appeal to more donors to gather their support for STEAM/STEM programme development in the two
Schools in the next 5 years. The aim is to further enhance the science literacy of young Wahyanites
so that they could become more competitive and creative in resolving problems in their daily life.

Moving heaven and earth, the funding will be deployed to upgrade other science laboratories, employ
more STEM teaching staff and support more workshops, internships and participations in local and
global competitions. “STEAM/STEM for all”, as the Project slogan goes, we will continue to sustain
STEAM development programmes in both Wah Yans.
Our YouTube live talk on Running and Sports Health launched on 29 June 2023 had attracted
over 300 audiences. Proven effective in amassing alumni and friends, we will continue to produce
more live talks from October 2023 onwards. Our web shop will be enhanced with more collectibles
in late 2023 so please stay tuned.
A group of young Wahyanites who have taken part in our first Marathon in 2008 vowed to repay
Wah Yan by going all out to complete the upcoming Full Marathon Race in the SCB Hong Kong
Marathon under 3 hours, a record only around 200+ runners out of the 60,000+ participants could
achieve each year. In return for their hard fight, they want to raise over HKD500,000 to support sports
development in both Wah Yans.
These runners formed a group named “Pacemaker” and started offering professional training
courses for alumni, pupils and parents and friends of Wah Yan from August 2023 onwards. Over 20
alumni joined and enjoyed the first 2 sessions in great fun and harmony. We will continue to partner
with Pacemaker to gather more legs and funding for the School come rain or shine.
Looking ahead, we will focus on amassing a massive funding by 2024/2025 to enable the
Schools to cope with the ever-changing educational needs, government policies and university
admission requirements over time, especially in STEAM development and getting more NET teachers.
We are working with Schools on new fundraising drives and will announce a series of “Bloom
Campaign” events soon.
Again may we extend our greatest gratitude to your generosity to Wah Yan, and we look forward
to having your selfless support in the future.
