WRITE UP ON THE DESIGN OF CLARIFIER TANK
The clarifier tank is of diameter 38.0 m with water depth at edge = 3.35 m.

This structure is modelled in Staad using beam and plate elements.

The forces applied are dead loads due to self-weight and the water loads – vertical loads and lateral thrusts.

The vertical and lateral water loads are applied as hydrostatic loads in the Staad input.

Seismic loads are calculated as per IS 1893 part 2 2014 and applied in the structure as hydrodynamic forces.

The seismic parameters are Z = 0.16, Importance Factor I = 1.5( from Table 1 of IS 1893 Part 2 as per
recommendations of SE PHED ), Response reduction, R = 4 (SMRF),
The multiplying factor to be applied in Staad input = Z/2 * I/R = 0.16/2*1.5/4 = 0.03
Though the structure is on Hard soil , Soil Type 3 implying soft strata is considered as per the comments of
SE PHED.
The water load is considered in full for the generation of seismic loads conservatively.
Lumped masses are calculated and applied in Staad for generation of seismic loads through Staad inbuilt
1893 load generator.
The structural part carrying the water is designed as water retaining structure and designed as uncracked
section as per IS 3370 Part 2 2009. The basin slab, walls and the basin beams built integrally with the slab is
designed as uncracked and the reinforcement stresses at the water face are limited to the values as specified
in the Table 4 of the code.

The members below the basin, i.e., the columns and the tie beams at the pile cap level are designed as
cracked section using Limit State Method of IS 456-2000.

The grade of concrete used for the clarifier elements is M30 as per Technical Specifications.
For pile design M25 grade concrete is used as specified in the NIT document.
Geotechnical Information:
As per Soil Report the reference bore holes are BH4A
Piles are provided with the following parameters :
Pile Diameter = 600 mm Pile Shaft length = 26 m
FGL = EL ( + ) 1.00m Pile Cut off level = EL (- ) 2.615 m
Pile termination level = EL (-) 28.615 m
The pile capacities are listed below ( snapshot of the soil report is appended herewith)

2
The Piles are designed with Vertical Compression of 91.57t & Horizontal capacity of 3.90t.
Hence, the same design will hold good for the aforementioned reduced pile capacities to be on
conservative side.

SEISMIC CALULATION AS PER IS 1893 – PART 2 2014

As per the comments of PHED the entire seismic calculation is also done as per IS1893 Part 2 2014 considering the structure like elevated water tank and
using the seismic calculation methodology applied for elevated tanks as this structure is on frames which are supported on piles.

The CG of the empty tank is obtained from Staad – through a separate run.

Unit load of one ton is applied at each joint at this CG level and the deflection is noted. The Stiffness as required in the seismic calculation is obtained using
this value. A separate run is used to calculate the stiffness.

The total weight of the dry structure = 1889 tons as per staad output – this is used for further calculations for the seismic analysis as presented below.

Calculation of Ks :
Ti = 2p Unit load of 1.0 ton is applied at all joints at the empty RCC tank CG level

The CG location is obtained through staad command.
Total 560 tons applied and deflection recorded = 0.769 mm
Hence Ti = 0.112 secs So for 1 mm deflection , force required = 560 / 0.769 * 1.0 = 728.2 tons
So Ks = 728.2 tons/mm = 7282185 kN/m
Mass
mi / m = 0.12 Hence mi = 0.12 * 3646 = 437.5 tons Since the tank bottom is almost
ms ( weight of empty tank + 1/3 mass of staging ) = 1889 tons flushing with the foundaion level
Height of application full tank weight is considered.
hi / h = 0.375 Hence hi = 0.375 * 3.79 = 1.421 m

DESIGN OF PILE CAPS

Single pile caps are provided for each pile. These pile caps are tied by beams in both directions.

For the outermost row pile caps tied by circular beam TB1 pile cap type PC1 are provided.

For this row maximum reaction under static loads i.e. dead & live loads = 65 tons

Size of pile cap : 900 square x 800 mm depth

Selfweight of the pile caps are not added as the Staad file already accounts for considerable
overloading in case of selfweights as the junctions are considered in full for each element without
accounting for the reduction for the overlapping members.
As per Geotechnical report for
Allowable pile capacity = 91.57 tons for static loads
80.77 34 m pile shaft length
26

and during seismic loads allowable capacity = 1.25 * 91.57 =

80.77 101
114.5 tons

For second row of piles tied by circular beam TB2 , maximum vertical loads
= 75 tons

For third row of piles tied by circular beam TB3 , maximum vertical loads
= 79 tons

For the innermost pile cap for the channel,

Loads from Static Conditions )
total vertical reactions for the nodes = 444 tons
Load due to machine 30 tons node 3 94.8 tons
node 49807 78.3 tons
node 49235 92.6 tons
node 49329 94.06 tons
So net vertical load = 444 + 30 = 474 tons node 49486 83.4 tons

No. of piles provided = 6 Total = 443.2 tons

Hence maximum vertical load per pile = 79 tons

Pile capacity provided = 91.57 tons

80.77

Hence safe (Seismic loads in vertical direction at center should be ideally zero - hence ignored.)

31
SECTIONAL DESIGN OF PILE CAPS

Single pile caps are provided below each pile.

This implies that the pile caps will only be subjected to axial loads from the RCC frames.
Maximum load on the pile cap considered for design is the pile capacity = 91.57 tons

Pile cap size = 900 mm x 900 mm x 800 depth

Axial compression stress against factored load = 1.5 * 91.57 * 103 / ( 90 * 90 ) = 16.96 kg/cm2.

2
For M30 concrete allowable axial stress = 0.4*f ck = 12 Mpa = 120 kg/cm .

Hence nominal reinforcement is to be provided.

With 12 tor @ 100 c/c U type bars provided bothways,

As provided vertically = 32 nos 12 tor = 3619 sqmm

Compression capacity = 0.4 fck * Ac + 0.67 * fy * Asc

= 0.4 * 30 * ( 900*900 - 3619 ) + 0.67 * 500 * 3619 N

= 10888937 N = 1089 tons

Hence the reinforcement provided is okay

Provide four lateral rings of 12 tor to tie up the bars within the cap depth

Shear Link Requirements as per IS 13920 – 2016 for beams

The structural strength sufficiency of the beams as per IS 13920 2016 is already checked in Staad and the
Staad output provides for the same

For beams shear links to be placed as per the following provisions of IS 13920 2016

So for beam size 400 x 725 , d = 662.5 mm ; d/4 = 662.5 / 4 = 165.625 mm

Confining Spacing provided = 100 mm ; Zone = 2d = 2*662.5 = 1325 mm
Intermediate spacing d/2 = 662.5/2 = 331.25 mm ; Provided = 300 mm

For beam size 300 x 400 & 400 x 400 ; d = 342 mm ; d/4 = 342 / 4 = 85.5 mm
Confining Spacing provided = 85 mm ; Zone = 2d = 2*342 = 684 mm
Intermediate spacing d/2 = 342/2 = 171 mm ; Provided = 170 mm
Shear Link Requirements as per IS 13920 – 2016 for columns

39
For columns links requirements as per the following provisions of IS 13920 2016

For Columns C2 & C3

Column Size : 500 x 500 ; Longitudinal Reinforcement = 16 nos 16 tor bars
Link Spacing = D/4 = 500/4 = 125 mm ; Max Spacing = 100 mm
Main reinforcement diameter = 16 mm ; 6 * Bar dia = 96 mm
Spacing Provided = 95 mm

For Columns C1
Column Size : 500 x 500 ; Longitudinal Reinforcement = 16 nos 20 tor bars
Link Spacing = D/4 = 500/4 = 125 mm ; Max Spacing = 100 mm
Main reinforcement diameter = 20 mm ; 6 * Bar dia = 120 mm
Spacing Provided = 100 mm

For Columns Area of Shear Links as per IS 13920- 2016

40
For columns C2 & C3
Ash = 0.18 * 95 * 102 * 30/500 * (5002/4162 – 1 ) = 46.5 sqmm
With 8 tor bars Ash = 50.2 mm
So 8 tor bars @ 95 mm c/c is sufficient as shown in the sketch.

For columns C1
Ash = 0.18 * 100 * 102 * 30/500 * (5002/4162 – 1 ) = 48.95 sqmm
With 8 tor bars Ash = 50.2 mm
So 8 tor bars @ 100 mm c/c is sufficient as shown in the sketch.
