Quarter 1: Week 3-4
Arts and crafts are a means by which we communicate views, ideas, and feelings through
the use of skills and imagination. Through arts and crafts, we learn to value and appreciate artifacts
and images which were made by our ancestors.
This lesson will help you understand the arts and crafts of Luzon, its elements and
principles, and the different aspects of its rich culture, traditions, and history handed down to us
by our ancestors.
● The Bul’ul is a wooden sculpture that represents the rice granary spirits. It is used in rituals that
are performed to call the ancestors to protect their rice field from pestilence and to ask for an
abundant harvest.
● Hagabi-it is a huge long bench carved out of one single piece of wood, whose seat rises in the
middle from either end.
● Banaue Rice- Terraces- Famous work of art of Ifugao. The Ifugaos built them over a period of
centuries by carving terraces into the mountainsides and reinforcing each level with stone walls.
One of their finest products is their textiles, which is characterized by red stripes and white,
yellow and black geometrical patterns. The southern Kalinga women wear the wrap-around skirt
or tapis called kain, which reaches below the knee. It is worn below the abdomen, and when they
walk, one of the thighs is exposed.
●Tattooing is another form of art of Kalingas. Because it usually covers the chest and the arms,
it may be considered as clothing and decoration. It also signifies a rite of passage from youth to
adulthood, a mark of heroism, and bravery and one’s status in the community.
●The Labba is a bowl-shaped basket made from rattan, with sizes that vary from 20-150cm in
diameter.
●The Tingguians weave textiles for clothes and blankets. They are noted for their white textiles
with horizontal stripes found in the edges (like those in the bankuo or wrap-around skirt) or vertical
stripes in the center (like those found in the balwasi or female blouse).

Arts and crafts are important means of expression, which communicate views, ideas, and
feelings through the use of skills and imagination. They are part of our daily lives and are found
everywhere.
History tells us that even before the Spaniards came to our country, arts already existed and
were used by our ancestors as a part of their everyday lives.
Folk artists use different materials to create art works . These materials are called
mediums. Some of the media that artists use in art creation are crayons, colored markers, clay,
and other indigenous materials. Folk artists consider the elements of design such as line, color,
texture, value space, shape, and form in planning their art creation. They also combine visual
elements by using principle designs. Like the following:
5. Graduated Designs- a motif or pattern that is repeated but in graduated size from small to big,
or if it is color, from light to dark.
6. Symmetrical balance- both sides of the work are balanced.
7. Asymmetrical balance-when one side of the composition is not identical to the other side.
Activity 1. Identify the art process of each picture. Write A for pottery, B for sculpture, or C for

The arts and crafts of Luzon depict the rich culture and traditions of the Filipinos. The
textiles produced in every province signify their culture based on how they were made. The
materials, the techniques, and the symbols used in these arts and crafts have their own cultural and
traditional significance.
The Ivatans are the people living in the Batanes Group of Islands. The Ivatan women used
Vakul, headgear, while the men wore soot, a raincoat, which are made up of woven fibers of
vuyavuy,palm-a plant similar to coconut. The Ifugaos make the lingling-o, which symbolizes
fertility. They carve bul’ul, a representation of their ancestor spirits, in their rituals. They practice
tattooing as a part of their rich culture and traditions. Another form of sculpture tradition in Luzon
is the ukit of Laguna. Pottery is also found in the arts and crafts of Luzon, particularly the Burnay
of Ilocos. Architectures of the different provinces, especially the churches, display the rich cultural
heritage of the Spanish colonial period. Luzon is also known for its festivals and celebrations that
feature the different arts of the provinces- the kiping of Pahiyas in Quezon, the higantes of Rizal,
the singkaban of Bulacan and the lanterns of Pampanga. The prevalence of these arts and crafts in
contemporary times reveals our respect and appreciation for our traditions.

Art is part of the life of the indigenous people of the Philippines. This is shown in the
things that they used every day which are rich in traditional colors and patterns. These art forms
reflect their tribal background.
When our forefathers first set foot on our country, they made use of the available materials
for their needs. They used coconut fronds (leaves) as roofs and walls for their huts. They used
hardwoods and timbers for posts. They also used coconut fronds (leaves) as roofs and walls for
their huts. For their floors, they flattened bamboo slices. The things they used at home are also
made of native materials. They used bamboo tube for cooking utensils and rattan or nito for
baskets. Later on, they used durable materials that added some refinements on their crafts. They
improved their craftsmanship either from their own traditional ways or from borrowing
techniques used by other tribes.
These arts and crafts employ the different elements of art: line, color, shape and texture.
