ARTS AND CRAFTS OF MIMAROPA AND


VISAYAS GROUP OF ISLANDS
BEGIN

INTRODUCTION

In this unit, you will be introduced to the different folk arts and designs of
Southern Tagalog Islands and the Visayas group of islands. You will be learning the
representative folk arts and crafts from Mindoro, Marinduque, Romblon, and Palawan
(MIMAROPA, Island of Panay, Negros, Bohol, Cebu, Guimaras, Siquijor, Samar, and
Leyte. You will be familiar with the different motifs from the different places in the Luzon
and Visayas Islands that will be helpful in appreciating the diversity of our culture.

YOUR TARGETS

At the end of the module, you should be able to:

1. reflect on and derive the mood, idea or message emanating from selected
artifacts and art objects
2. Incorporate the design, form, and spirit of artifacts and art objects from Luzon
Island Provinces and Visayas.

KEEP THIS IN MIND

Indigenous Philippine art is art made by the indigenous peoples of the


Philippines.

Indigenous Art craft

 Patadyong
also called patadyung, patadjong, habol, or habul), is
an indigenous Philippine rectangular or tube-like wrap
around skirt worn by both men and women of
the Visayas islands

 Morion Mask
Wore in depicting the Roman soldiers and Syrian
mercenaries within the story of the Passion of the Christ

 Colored Mats
A baníg is a hand woven mat usually used in East Asia
and the Philippines for sleeping and sitting.

 Sinamay
Sinamay is widely used for blocking hats and trims, but
it wasn’t introduced to the millinery world until the
1990s. It is woven in the Philippines, from the stalks of
the abaca tree.

 Marble Product- Romblon’s world-famous marble


comes in a spectrum of shades ranging from white to
black with in-between tints of mottled white, tiger white
and onyx. A guided tour to one of the marble factories is
enlightening on how marble is processed into works of
art.
