Regional Literature: Hiligaynon Literature
Hiligaynon Literature
The latest recipient of the National Artist for Literature award is Ramon Muzones who happened to
be one of the pioneering Ilonggo writers who helped shape and enrich Hiligaynon Literature.
Locsin-Nava in Cordora stated that Muzones wrote more than 60 novels, most of them are
serialized in Hiligaynon magazine and other regional publications. His work Margosatubig: The
Story of Salagunting became his most important work because it is a necessary f iction with the
paradigm of historical imagining of the ideal nation.
Deriada (n.d.) stated in the NCCA website that Hiligaynon is the lingua franca of Western
Visayas in the central Philippines, which is composed of the following provinces: Iloilo,
Capiz, Antique and Aklan on the island of Panay, Negros Occidental, and Guimaras.
Magos (n.d.) explained that “Panaynon” is a collective term referring to the people from the
four provinces in Panay; while Aklanon, Capiznon, and Negrosnon or Antiqueño refer to the
people in the respective provinces. Meanwhile, people from Iloilo are referred to as Ilonggo
because of the old name “Irong-irong.”

There are other important writers not included in the list. The important thing is that Western
Visayas has very rich literature. Mojares emphasized, “a study of regional and vernacular
literature, therefore, should lead us to a fuller understanding of the Philippine cultural landscape
as we cut across social dasses and geographical regions.” Cultural landscape reveals a lot about
the evolving relationship between literature and humanity. By empowering literature from the dif
érent regions, one will realize the importance of representation. The reality is not just focused on
people from the metro. It is also shared by human elements present in other regions. This shared
cultural consciousness as a nation will lead to an understanding of our cultural history.
