iii. What is the purpose of adding calcium chloride during the extraction of metal Z.?
iv. Why metal Z is always stored under kerosene?

(b) By using chemical equation, give the reason for your answer. What will happen when
i. Barium chloride solution is added to an aqueous solution of potassium Sulphate.
ii. Silver nitrate solution is added to aqueous solution of potassium chloride.
iii. Carbon dioxide is passed through lime water for 32 seconds.
iv. Anhydrous copper (ii) sulphate is left open overnight.
(c) Briefly explain why it is important to apply chemistry in agriculture.
7. (a) i. What is the energy value of a fuel?
ii. List four factors that determine the choice of a good fuel.
(b) Ethanol, which is used as a fuel, burns in air according to the equation shown below;
C2H5OH(l) + 3O2(g) → 3H2O(g) + 3CO2(g) + heat
In an experiment to determine the heat value of ethanol, the heat produced by an ethanol burner was used
to heat 200 cm3 of water. The following results were obtained.
Mass of lamp = 56.69g
Mass of lamp + ethanol = 59.46 g
Initial temperature of water = 25.4ºC
Final temperature of water = 31.2ºC
Assuming there were no heat losses, calculate the heat value of ethanol. (Specific heat capacity of water
c = 4.18 kJ/kg/ K)
8. (a) The following are thermal chemical reaction equations. State whether they are exothermic or endothermic
reactions and draw energy level diagrams for each of the reactions.
i. 2C(s) + 2H2(g) → C2H2 ∆H=53.2KJ/mol
ii. C(s) + O2(g) → CO2(g) ∆H= -393.5KJ/mol
(b) Name the process involved in commercial production of;
(i) Sulphuric acid (ii) Ammonia gas

SECTION C (30 Marks)


Answer TWO questions from this section.
9. When dilute nitric acid is added to a green solid P, a blue solution Q is formed and a gas R that forms a white
precipitate with lime water is also produced. Evaporation of the blue solution to dryness, and then strongly
heating it in a crucible forms a black solid S, brown fumes of a gas T, and a gas that relights a glowing splint.
(a) Identify the
i. Solid P and S
ii. Gases R and T
(b) Write a chemical equation for the:
i. Reaction between solid P and dilute nitric acid
ii. Formation of solid S
10. (a) State faraday’s laws of electrolysis
(b) If 0.2 Faraday is used in production of hydrogen gas electrolyticaly, then the gas formed allowed to pass
through a hot tube with a sample of copper (II) oxide and copper (II) sulphate in which chemical changes
and physical changes occurred in the sample.
i. Which compound between copper (II) oxide and copper (II) sulphate encountered chemical change
and physical change?

ii. If the product for the chemical changes involved, one of its products was 10g of the solid and other
product was liquid. Calculate the volume of the hydrogen gas that should be supplied and the volume
