1. For what value of 𝜆𝜆 does the following system has non-trivial solution(s)? Find the solution(s).

2𝑥𝑥 + 𝑦𝑦 + 𝑧𝑧 = 𝜆𝜆𝜆𝜆, 𝑥𝑥 + 2𝑦𝑦 + 𝑧𝑧 = 𝜆𝜆𝜆𝜆, 𝑥𝑥 + 𝑦𝑦 + 2𝑧𝑧 = 𝜆𝜆𝜆𝜆

2. If 𝒖𝒖
⃗ and 𝒗𝒗
⃗ are nonzero vectors, show that the vector ⃗
𝒘𝒘 = ‖𝒗𝒗 ⃗ + ‖𝒖𝒖
⃗‖𝒖𝒖 ⃗ bisects the angle
⃗‖𝒗𝒗
between 𝒖𝒖⃗ and 𝒗𝒗⃗.

3. Find nonzero vectors (if any) orthogonal to the following vectors: (6, −1,2,2), (1,4,3,0),
(4, −5, −4,2).

⃗ is the zero vector in a vector space 𝑉𝑉 and 𝛼𝛼 is any scalar, then prove that 𝛼𝛼𝟎𝟎
4. If 𝟎𝟎 ⃗ = 0.

5. Consider the vector space ℝ𝑛𝑛 with standard vector addition and scalar multiplication.
i. Show that the following definition of inner product makes ℝ𝑛𝑛 an inner product space:
⃗ are any two vectors in ℝ𝑛𝑛 and
⃗ ⋅ 𝒗𝒗⃗ ≡ 𝑤𝑤1 𝑢𝑢1 𝑣𝑣1 + ⋯ + 𝑤𝑤𝑛𝑛 𝑢𝑢𝑛𝑛 𝑣𝑣𝑛𝑛 , where 𝒖𝒖⃗ and 𝒗𝒗
𝒖𝒖
𝑤𝑤1 , … , 𝑤𝑤𝑛𝑛 are positive constants.
ii. Show that the following definition of norm makes ℝ𝑛𝑛 a normed vector space: ‖𝒖𝒖 ⃗‖ ≡
|𝑢𝑢1 | + ⋯ + |𝑢𝑢𝑛𝑛 |, where 𝒖𝒖 𝑛𝑛
⃗ is any vector in ℝ and |𝑢𝑢𝑖𝑖 | represents absolute value of 𝑢𝑢𝑖𝑖 .

6. Determine whether the following set of vectors from ℝ4 is linearly dependent or independent:
{(2,4,0,1), (1,0,1,2), (1, −3,1,2), (1,1, −1, −1)}.

7. Prove or disprove:
i. 𝒗𝒗
⃗ is in span{𝒗𝒗
⃗1 , … , 𝒖𝒖⃗𝑘𝑘 } if {𝒗𝒗
⃗, 𝒖𝒖⃗1 , … , 𝒖𝒖⃗𝑘𝑘 } is linearly dependent.
ii. 𝒗𝒗
⃗ is not in span{𝒖𝒖 ⃗1 , … 𝒖𝒖⃗𝑘𝑘 } if {𝒗𝒗 ⃗, 𝒖𝒖⃗1 , … , 𝒖𝒖⃗𝑘𝑘 } is linearly independent.
iii. 𝒗𝒗
⃗ is not in span{𝒖𝒖 ⃗1 , … , 𝒖𝒖⃗𝑘𝑘 } if and only if {𝒗𝒗 ⃗, 𝒖𝒖⃗1 , … , 𝒖𝒖⃗𝑘𝑘 } is linearly independent.

8. Show whether the vectors (1,2,0,4), (2,3,1, −1), (0,1,0,1), (0,0,0,0), (1,1,2,3) span ℝ4 . Can
these vectors be a basis of ℝ4 ?

9. Consider the following three vectors 𝒗𝒗⃗1 = (1,0,0,0), 𝒗𝒗⃗2 = (1,1,1,0) and 𝒗𝒗 ⃗3 = (𝑎𝑎, 𝑏𝑏, 𝑐𝑐, 1). Find
conditions on 𝑎𝑎, 𝑏𝑏, 𝑐𝑐 such that dim[span{𝒗𝒗 ⃗1 , 𝒗𝒗⃗2 , 𝒗𝒗⃗3 }] = 3. What is your answer when
⃗1 , 𝒗𝒗⃗2 , 𝒗𝒗⃗3 }] = 2? Can the dim[span{𝒗𝒗
dim[span{𝒗𝒗 ⃗1 , 𝒗𝒗⃗2 , 𝒗𝒗⃗3 }] be 1? Why or why not?

10. Find the orthonormal vectors 𝒆𝒆1 , 𝒆𝒆2 , 𝒆𝒆3 by Gram-Schmidt orthogonalization from 𝒖𝒖⃗1 , 𝒖𝒖⃗2 , 𝒖𝒖⃗3 :
⃗1 = (1,2,1), 𝒖𝒖⃗2 = (1, −1,2), 𝒖𝒖⃗3 = (−1,3,1)
𝒖𝒖
