Part B

Micro-Project Report

Title of Micro-Project:-Smart Garden using Cisco packet

Tracer.

1. Rationale:-
In this report, we'll explore how to create a smart garden using Cisco Packet Tracer, a
tool that helps simulate and test computer networks. Our goal is to set up a system
that makes gardening easier by using technology. We'll use a water level monitoring
sensor to keep track of water levels, a lawn sprinkler to water the garden, a laptop to
monitor everything, and an Iota server to manage it all.
Smart gardens use technology to make gardening simpler and more efficient. By
automating tasks like watering, we can save time and resources while ensuring our
plants get the care they need. With a smart garden, we can monitor and control
everything from one central place, making gardening more convenient and enjoyable.

2. Aim of Micro Project:-

Smart Garden using Cisco packet Tracer

3. Course Outcomes Achieved:-

CO1. Use basic concepts of networking for setting up computer network

CO2. Setup computer network for specific requirements.
CO3. Configure basic network services
CO4. Configure the different TCP/IP services.
CO5. Implement Subnetting for improved network address management.

4. Theory:-
About Computer network:-
Computer networking involves the interconnection of multiple computing devices to
share resources and communicate with each other. It encompasses hardware, software,
protocols, and standards that enable data transmission and exchange over networks,
such as the internet or local area networks (LANs). Networking allows users to access

information, services, and applications remotely, facilitating collaboration and

resource sharing.

About Cisco Packet tracer

Cisco Packet Tracer is a network simulation tool developed by Cisco Systems. It's
primarily used for training and educational purposes to simulate complex network
configurations and troubleshoot networking issues. Packet Tracer provides a virtual
environment where users can design, configure, and test network setups without the
need for physical hardware.

Here are some key features and uses of Cisco Packet Tracer:-
Simulation: Packet Tracer allows users to simulate various network devices such as
routers, switches, servers, and end devices like PCs and mobile devices. This helps in
understanding how different network components interact with each other.
Topology Design: Users can create network topologies by dragging and dropping
devices onto the workspace. This includes connecting devices with cables and
configuring their properties.
Protocols and Technologies: Packet Tracer supports a wide range of networking
protocols and technologies including IPv4, IPv6, VLANs, OSPF, EIGRP, DHCP, NAT,
VPNs, and more. Users can configure these protocols to see how they operate in a
network environment.
Packet Monitoring and Analysis: It allows users to capture and analyze network
packets, helping in troubleshooting network issues and understanding data flow within
the network.
Educational Tool: Packet Tracer is extensively used in networking courses and
certifications (such as Cisco's CCNA and CCNP) to provide hands-on experience in
configuring and managing network infrastructures.
About Smart Gardening using Cisco packet tracer:-
The integration of Internet of Things (IoT) technology in agriculture has led to the
development of smart gardening systems, enhancing efficiency and resource
management. In this project, a smart garden system is implemented using Cisco
Packet Tracer, integrating a water level monitoring sensor, lawn sprinkler, laptop for
monitoring, and an IoT server.

System Architecture:

 The water level monitoring sensor is connected to the IoT server through a
wireless connection, such as Wi-Fi or Zigbee.

IFSY (2023-24) Page 4 of 10

Smart Garden Using Cisco Packet Tracer

 The IoT server collects data from the sensor and processes it to determine the
water level status.
 Based on the water level data, the IoT server sends commands to the lawn
sprinkler to adjust watering accordingly.
 Users can monitor the smart garden system using a laptop connected to the
same network as the IoT server, accessing a web-based interface.
Functionalities:
 Real-time monitoring of water levels in the garden reservoir.
 Automatic adjustment of watering based on the water level status.
 Remote access to the smart garden system for monitoring and control.
 Alerts and notifications for critical events, such as low water levels or system
malfunctions.

Components:
1. Water Level Monitoring Sensor: This sensor keeps track of how much water is
in the garden‟s reservoir. It helps us know when the plants need watering.
2. Lawn Sprinkler: The sprinkler waters the garden based on the information
from the water level sensor. It ensures the plants get the right amount of water
at the right time.
3. Laptop: We use the laptop to check on our garden. It shows us the water levels,
when the sprinkler is running, and if everything is working properly.
4. IoT Server: The IoT server is like the brain of our smart garden. It collects data
from the sensor, tells the sprinkler when to water, and lets us monitor the
garden from our laptop.

Benefits:
a. Efficient water usage, minimizing waste and optimizing plant health.
b. Remote management capabilities, allowing users to monitor and control the
system from anywhere.
c. Improved productivity and convenience for gardeners through automation and
smart technology integration.

How It Works:
The water level sensor constantly checks the water level in the reservoir and sends this
information to the IoT server.
Based on the water level data, the IoT server decides when to turn on the sprinkler to
water the garden.
We can use the laptop to see what's happening in the garden in real-time. We can
check the water levels, see if the sprinkler is running, and make adjustments if needed.

Smart Garden Using Cisco Packet Tracer

Advantages:
 Efficiency: A smart garden system optimizes resource usage by automating tasks
such as watering based on real-time data from sensors. This leads to more efficient
water usage and improved plant health.
 Convenience: With remote monitoring and control capabilities, gardeners can
easily manage their garden from anywhere using a laptop or mobile device. This
convenience saves time and effort.
 Conservation: By monitoring environmental conditions and plant needs, a smart
garden system can help conserve water and reduce wastage, contributing to
sustainability efforts.
 Data-driven decision-making: The availability of data from sensors allows for
informed decision-making regarding watering schedules, fertilization, and pest
management, leading to better overall garden management.
 Scalability: Cisco Packet Tracer allows for simulation and testing of smart garden
systems, making it easy to scale up the system for larger gardens or adapt it to
different environments without the need for physical implementation.
Disadvantages:
Initial setup complexity: Setting up a smart garden system with Cisco Packet Tracer
may require technical knowledge and familiarity with networking concepts, which
could be challenging for beginners.
Cost: While Cisco Packet Tracer itself is free for educational purposes, implementing
a real-world smart garden system may involve costs for hardware components such as
sensors, sprinklers, and an IOT server.
Reliability on technology: Smart garden systems rely heavily on technology and
network connectivity. Any technical issues or failures with the IoT server or network
infrastructure could disrupt the system's functionality.
Maintenance requirements: Regular maintenance and calibration of sensors, as well as
software updates for the IoT server are necessary to ensure the continued smooth
operation of the smart garden system.
Security concerns: As with any IoT system, security vulnerabilities could potentially
expose the smart garden system to cyber threats such as unauthorized access or data
breaches. Proper security measures must be implemented to mitigate these risks.
Overall, while building a smart garden with Cisco Packet Tracer offers numerous
advantages in terms of efficiency, convenience, and conservation, it also comes with
challenges related to setup complexity, cost, reliability, maintenance, and security.
However, with careful planning and implementation, these disadvantages can be
mitigated, allowing gardeners to enjoy the benefits of a technologically enhanced
gardening experience.
