ACKNOWLEDGMENT

It gives me great pleasure to express my gratitude towards our

Chemistry teacher Smt.AMUTHA for her guidance, support and
encouragement throughout the duration of the project on topic:
"DISCOVERY OF NATURAL DYE IN GARDEN"

Then Iwould like to thank my parents and friends who have helped me
With thelr valuable suggestions, guidance has been helpful in various

Discoveryof Natural Dye in the
Garden
Introduction

Dyes obtained from plants, fruits, flowers, and other natural

SOurces.

Eco-friendly, biodegradable, and non-toxic compared to

synthetic dyes.
Objective of the Project

" To explore and extract dyes from common garden plants.

" To understand the chemical nature and behavior of these
dyes.
" To test their potential in dyeing fabrics.
Materials Required

Garden plants: Hibiscus, marigold, turmeric, beetroot, etc.

Chemicals: Vinegar, alum, sodium carbonate (mordants).
Equipment: Beakers, mortar and pestle, filter paper, heat
source, cloth samples.

Principle of Dye Extraction

Chromophores: Functional groups that absorb visible light to

produce colors.
Auxochromes: Enhance the color's intensity by modifying
chromophore properties.
Role of pH and mordants in stabilizing the dye and fixing it
onto fabric.
Procedure

Collection: Gather flowers, leaves, or roots from the garden.

Preparation: Crush the material and mix with water or alcohol
for extraction.
" Extraction: Boil the mixture toextract pigments.
Filtration: Filter the solution to remove plant residues.
Application: Soak fabric in the dye and add mordants for
better results.
Examples of Natural Dyes

Hibiscus flowers: Light pink to red hues.

Turmeric root: Bright yellow color.
Beetroot:Deep red or maroon shade.
Marigold flowers:Yellow to orange tones.
Role of Mordants

Mordants: Substances used to fix dyes on fabric.

Examples: Alum,vinegar, iron salts.
Impact of different mordants on dye colors.

Chemical Explanation

" Curcumin from turmeric, anthocyanin from hibiscus.

Effect of pH change on color: Example - Beetroot becomes
more intense in acidic conditions.
" Interaction between mordants and chromophores.
Advantages of Natural Dyes

Biodegradable and non-toxic.

Environmentally safe.
Provides aesthetic and unique color shades.

Limitations of Natural Dyes

Less durable than synthetic dyes.

Limited range of colors.
Requires mordants for better fixation.
Applicationsof Natural Dyes

Textile dyeing.
Food coloring (example: turmeric in curries).
Cosmetics and art supplies (e.g., henna).

Conclusion

Natural dyes are sustainable alternatives to synthetic dyes.

Their chemical behavior depends on pigments and mordants.
Promoting natural dyes can reduce environmental pollution.
