ASSIGNMENT NO.

01
[ FUEL and COMBUSTION]

QUESTIONS

1. Distinguish between GCV & NCV.

2. What are the characteristics of good fuel?
3. Explain proximate analysis of coal .
4. Define GCV , NCV and calorific value .

NUMERICALS

1. 2.9 gm coal sample was heated and ammonia evolved was absorbed in 40 ml 0.5N
H2SO4. After absorption the excess acid requires 28.5 ml 0.5 N KOH for neutralization.
3.3 gm of same coal sample in quantitative analysis gave 0.35 gm Barium sulphate ppt.
Calculate percent of Nitrogen & Sulphur for a given coal sample.

2. A sample of coal has the following composition by mass. C=70% ,H=10%, O=4%,
S=2%, N=2%, and Ash=12% . calculate GCV and NCV by Dulong’s formula.

3. A coal sample contain C=65%, H=13%, O=5%,S=4%,N=12%, Ash=3% . Calculate

minimum amount of air required weight & volume for complete combustion of 2Kg fuel.

4. 2.5 gm of air dried coal sample was taken in silica crucible .After heating it in an electric
oven at 1100c for 1 hour .The residue was weighed 2.41 gm. The residue was heated with
vented lid at 9500c for exactly 7 minutes after cooling the weight of residue 2.21 gm was
ignited at 7000c to get constant weight residue 0.246 gm. Then calculate present fixed
carbon.

5. A coal sample contain C=85%, H=5%, O=5%,S=2%, Ash=3% .calculate minimum

amount of air required weight & volume for complete combustion of 2Kg fuel.
